Default 4L80E shifter question

I am also posting this in the Tuning section.

I have a 4L80E in my 02 F-body. Because I have a transbrake I have to place the shifter in first gear and cycle threw the gears when I race. I bought a new B&M Pro Ratchet shifter for it. While removing the factory shifter I noticed there is a devise on the side of the shifter that has a large rectangle plug. I am guessing this device tells the PCM what gear the shifter is in. On the new shifter there is no provision for this device.

Can someone tell me if this device does what I am thinking it does? Also if this device is doing what I think, what will happen if I do not use it? What solutions will I need to do to over come this issue?

Also, this car is a 50% quarter mile car and a 50% street car.

Thanks in advance.
