lol 4l60's get such a BS rep... they are a tough trans. I have beat the hell out of mine for the 6 years ive owned my car, including about 10 bottles of a 100 shot. The trans isnt real happy on the 100 shot shifting time wise (well considering its making atleast 500 RWHP on a bone stock trans) but thing still holds together fine and ran a 7.0 spinning this year.. I put 70-80 mid to low 7 track passes on it last year N/A and maybe 15-20(most were taking off easy to start the timer and hit it 20' out so i didnt get kicked out...) 100 shot passes on it this year... that along with 10-15 N/A passes this year and i dont even know how many blasts elsewhere over the last 6 years... lol.. And btw i have taken out torque management to only 25% so its only pulling like 5º during the shift.
Can one fail with 50k miles under light abuse? sure.. Ive read of some ls1's throwing rods under stock power level, yet people dont call them junk. **** breaks. Just think for a minute how many gm cars have a 4l60e.. the more you have of something the more you will read about them breaking...

my opinion - less than stock power levels.
and if you remove torque management (computer reduces power at times to protect the tranny), good luck.
i'm on my 3rd 4L60E and i thought i was going easy on the 1st one. my 2nd tranny ("built" by a local shop that is no longer in business) lasted through a few hundred pounds of nitrous and 46,000 miles. right now i'm heads/cam only on a xtreme performance 4L60E (sponsor here) and i think this one is a keeper.

The Transgo kit can make it shift faster and tighter to reduce the excessive friction. I recommend having one of those kits installed before going racing.

They will take quite the abuse. The problem is when the car hooks,as long as there is some tire spin it will shift. The more load the shorter the life. Stay away from sticky tires until you get an upgrade.

i can personally say all this "4L60E is Junk" talk is a bunch of JUNK!!! I ran a stock 4L60E with merely a simple shift kit (seperator plate mod's).......for 2 years behind a 355CI LT1 running 11.40's @ 120+ in a 3400lb car...........the trans ran great with no issues then eventually it lost 3rd/4th gear clutches........i was amazed it lasted with that abuse........now i have a built one in the car still with overdrive and a lockup converter........the car runs deep into the 10's consistantly at over 130mph+ and the car was 3515lbs all year....the car cuts 1.40 60''s all day long with the front end well in the air.......the 4L60E in the right hands is a VERY strong VERY compentent VERY good transmission............alot of the garbage you hear about them being garbage is mostly due to the build of the transmision it self and the lack of knowledge upon buying parts and assembling them.........they are a great transmission even untouched from GM

I think to get one to last, change your fluid regularly, run a cooler, run a deep pan and don't abuse the the trans. Heat is what kills it. I had maybe 90 passes last year with mine with just a Trans Go as only internal mod. Get the car light and it will last a while. Avoid hot lapping the car too. When its time to rebuild, go to someone who has done a lot of ones behind cars with serious power.

The TH350 is the same transmission without the overdrive modifcations. If you can't get your 700r4 to shift then there is either a pump pressure problem or you don't have your valve body setup properly. On a 400rwp car you shouldn't have any trouble as long as you have a shift kit. Did you check the pump pressure on the 700r4?

Yea i dont know what was up with that tranny man i work at a transmission shop and the builder is my friend we fucked with that 4l60 over and over he wants me to build it but i still went with the th350 for a few reasons one its 40 pounds lighter, i dont have to bug my tuner if i wanna change shift points cuz i have mvb and parts are way cheaper a full clutch/steel kit with new screen was 63 dollars it just fits what i want out my car better. He can build the 4l60 to last but i dont wanna pay for the high parts. The last day the tranny went boom my tuner was there and couldnt get it to shift it never shifted from day one once i put this motor behind it with my bolt on motor and yank stall it was fine but it never liked this set up

Same here, sprayed my 3,600lb 02 camaro for 2-3 years cutting 1.52 60' before i broke the trans.. And the only reason it blew when it did was because the rear end broke the gear and locked itself up!

The 4L60E max torque rating is 360 ft-lb. The gearbox rating is higher, I believe 450, but the factory bands can only handle 360. The beefier version, 4L65E, could handle 380.
