Default my troublesome 4L60E

some suggestions would be appreciated. i have a 99 Z28 and my tranny is worrying me. I had it rebuilt at 60,000 miles and it now has 76,000 miles. Its making some strange noises. when i let my foot off the brake with the car in dr., it makes a funny clunk sound that can be felt as well. also, when i get on the throttle and the rear wheels don't break loose there is a series off loud banging noises on the rear floor boards. this only happens when i DON'T lose traction. so i have a car that i'm afraid to drive like a camaro and instead drive it like its and old crown vic. is anyone else experiencing problems similar?

Could very well be the trans mount. Can you feel anything weird in your shifter? Try stalling it up a bit in any gear and hold your hand on the shifter, now let off the brake and jump on the gas a bit. Do you feel anything in the shifter? Maybe a vibration or something like a pounding/jumping/bouncing/banging? That would likely be a trans mount if so.....

Best way I found to check for a broken trans mount is when you take off at 1/4 throttle you would hear something hit then when you step on the brakes fairly hard you would hear something hit.

Once I suspect that a mount is broken I usually just get under the car and use a pry bar to push the trans up from the crossmember and see if the mount lets it go. Any cracks in the mount become very apperent at that point......

when i got it safety inspected last month and it was up on the lift, so i borrowed a pry bar and couldn't budge it. its done this ever since i bought it used at 39k miles. i have no mods to speak of but i have big plans for a 427ci stroker motor. that stock tranny won't hold the hp i'm thinking of. what do you think of a turbo 400 street raptor from transmission center. its rated at 1000hp but its $3700. what tranny would you suggest?

So you checked the trans mount today? You dont need any mods to break a tranny mount I broke mine when my car was stock and my buddy broke his in his LT1 the first week he had it.

what kind of trans are you putting in your Z? i'm kind of in the market for one. i don't have too much faith in the 4L, will a T56 fair any better for serious hp?

My buddy has a Turbo 400 in his Vette with a 454 and he stands by it. So, yeah sounds good. I have read in a couple mags and here that the stock tranny is good for 450 HP or 500 HP tops.

FLP Level 4 is going in my car. I know a couple of people who have big motors behind them 427s and all bore motors. My trans should have no problem holding together its when I start spraying over 200 hp Im going to have to start worrying. T56 do hold up better but if its a car you drag alot you may want to stay with a A4, plus you can still smoke clutches and break the shifting forks. I will probably go to a TH400 once I blow up this FLP one but my camaro is my daily driver so I need something with overdrive for now.
