Default LQ4 - What 4L80E do I use?

I have a 2005 LQ4 but it did not come with a trans. I was told it was from a Denali which would mean I need a 4L65E. Everyone suggests running the 4L80E for strength though. If I use a 4L80, what years can I use? What needs to be done with the tune and harness?

What vehicle is it going in? Assuming an Fbody, any year can go into it, the bolt pattern on the bellhousing is different for the earlier years up to 1996 on the 80es though.

It's going in an S10. My only concern is about the wiring and tune. I know it will bolt up but I doubt I can simply plug the stock harness in and go...

Along with the propper bolt pattern, the 99+ 4L80e is a much better unit to start with than the early ones. The 4L80e will not simply plug in. Depending on your power output a 4L80e is probably not really required for your application and will just add extra cost.

If you already have a 4L80e or you are planning on 600-700hp in your truck check out http://www.speartech.com/ Click the "Adapter harness" icon and scroll down to the "4L80e upgrade harness". That is what you will need to convert your 4L60e harness to opperate a 4L80e. Then you will need your ECM reprogrammed to conrtoll it.

Thank you! Since my build is stock I will follow your advice. Now, can you help me determine what year 60e I need? I want to be able to plug right in and go with my base tune.

One last thing, are the electronics the same in the 60e and 65e? Thanks!

97+ all have the same bolt pattern, and why do you think the 99+ is a much better unit to start with? The only differences are the lube circuit change that came about in 97+, and the overdrive is stronger in the 96 and below units. There are a few other minor variations but those are basically the biggest. I will admit the fact that the 97+ bellhousings can bolt up to the LS1 style flexplate is definitely a plus.

Not trying to seem like I'm calling you out or anything, just curious.
