I need to get regular non synthetic Dexron III.
My choices are:
Castrol Dex/Merc domestic multi vehicle atf
Castrol Dex VI atf
I'm just doing a filter change in my 99 trans am with RPM trans.

Note that Dexron VI is synthetic, but that should be fine. GM recommends it since about 2002, many people use it, it works very well, but many just don't think it is worth the extra cost.

IDK if its synthetic or not. I heard its a mix, not full but idk. GM parts guy told me they switched to dex6 and dont even have dex3 anymore.
I replaced all the fluid in my trans with dex6 a couple years ago when I did my yank stall. Its funny cause on the yank card is says not to use synthetic but says dex6 is ok...

Sheesh... JUNK keeps stealing my words...! But, he's right. I don't use synthetic ATF in, well, anything. I find that it's too slippery and can lead to poor shift quality. I run a quality Dex III and Lubegard additive in some cases where a friction modifier is needed (Dodge primarily).

GM revoked the rights to the Dexron name being used for any fluid but Dex VI. I assume to prevent confusion.
Dex VI is backward compatible and IMO won't hurt anything being used in a older trans.
What we know as Dex II or Dex 3 is now commonly called Multi-Purpose ATF or Multi-Vehicle.
We recommend the cheap stuff for most applications and agree that we prefer to see more frequent services than an expensive fluid.
On extreme applications we recommend a tractor/transmission fluid equivalent to John Deere Hygard, JD-20, Caterpillar, and others. This fluid seems to be more resistant to heat and shear, and works well.
Pictured below are TH400 clutches after 2 years, hundreds of passes, thousands of street miles, on a 1200 RWHP car using Hygard, as you can see on the bench.
