How much power are you making through your 4L60E?
Hey fellas. So I know that if you want to make big power you don't want a 4L60E. Unfortunately, I wasn't planning on making big power when I ordered my built 4L60E a few years and 4k miles ago (the car hasn't left the garage for a while due to a blown engine). I am running a fresh Performabuilt 4L60E with a Vigilante 3400 converter, Hughes Performance deep trans pan, and Derale Atomic-Cool external cooler (bypassing the radiator).
This winter I plan on getting the car back on the road with a 5.3, and cranking up the boost a bit. My expectations are to adjust the boost to make around 800 RWHP (maybe a little more), and I realize it will only be a matter of time before I will be looking to have to swap in a built 4L80E. I'm running a full-weight 2005 GTO... and probably have an extra 100-150 lbs in the car than stock. Not a light car, obviously.
So my questions for you 600+ RWHP guys running a 4L60E are:
1. Exactly which 4L60E are you running (RPM Stage V, Performabuilt Level II, etc.):
2. What is your RWHP:
3. How much does your car weigh, roughly:
4. What is your 1/4 mile ET (if applicable):
Thanks fellas.

Thanks for the responses guys. So even though you guys are 300 lbs lighter than me, it's good to see you guys are making those numbers through the 4L6x trans. I'm hoping I'll be able to make the same power in mine for a little while, in a 3,900 lbs car. I guess time will tell.

I would highly suggest upgrading the trans before you try to put 800rwhp through it. Remember that a blown trans will clog up or even damage the converter, require a new cooler, etc. IMHO, at a minimum a billet output shaft is the needed for that power. The Sonnax input drum would be another good addition, ideally with a billet input shaft.
Note that the others posts are running 4L65E which have the 5-pinion planets.
Perhaps Performabuilt will upgrade your trans, or just go to a 4L80E. You can sell a good working 4L60E for a lot more than a busted one. Hey, just my opinion.

Anyhow, I absolutely respect your opinion, and if I had $10k laying around to put into the car I would just do the entire driveline right now and be done with it.

I've heard of people doing it, they're just few and far between. Not sure what longevity to expect out of these transmissions with that kind of power, but I plan on trying to see what I can get out of mine.

Definitely not going to go against your suggestion... but I have probably $10K+ to still invest in the driveline on this car, between a built 4L80E, new converter, driveshaft, and built 9" IRS. Something is going to go, and I'm not going to have the funds to do it all at once, so I'm just going to replace things as they break unfortunately. I'm having a strong feeling the stock 2-piece driveshaft and/or the the differential and/or the half-shafts are going to go first.... but obviously it's impossible to predict what's going to give first to determine where to spend the money. Unless anyone want to make a small, $10,000 donation to the car lol.

I suspect some/most/all of the 4L65E that are handling 700rwhp are in the $4000+ price range.

Oh no, no Corvette here. Just a 2005 GTO. My original transmission was a 4L65E, but the Performabuilt I purchased and installed was a Level II 4L60E, so that's how I ended up with a 60e in a 2005 GTO, in case you're wondering. But yeah the IRS in these cars doesn't withstand much power at all before half-shafts shred, differentials blow, etc. A lot of 6-speed GTO's only get to the 420 RWHP mark before breaking stuff behind the transmission.

Any benefit to running your 4L80E versus your black 4L60E in an application like mine? I've been very pleased with my Level II and definitely plan on coming to you guys for another transmission when the funds are there. I would just need to decide if the additional costs of upgrading to the black 4L60E significantly out-weigh the costs of installing and modifying everything for a 4L80E.
