AWD 4l80e to 2wd
have 2 AWD trans, vehicle that its going into is 2wd already.
so swapping from AWD to 2WD needed parts...
rear planetary with reluctor
2WD output shaft
2WD tail shaft housing
anything im missing? don't waste time giving me the lecture about selling them and buying 2WD. they are coming apart for a full rebuild and upgraded shafts anyway.

4wd to 2wd extension housing conversion
HI All
installing a 4wd 4l80e into a 2wd 1970 c10 we needed some type of tail housing to convert the 4wd to 2wd. searched the internet for a housing, found nothing. I was at the machine shop down the street and saw something similar he was building for a truck PTO. told him what we needed and he built us one. bolts right on to the transmission.looks just like a bolt on yoke. but all one unit.saved the trouble and expense of pulling apart the trans to replace the tail shaft.

tail housing
I mentioned to him there may be some interest in them, but was not sure. he has all the programs to make them. I supplied the yoke. he supplied the bearing, snap rings and aluminum. the yoke was $50.00 and he charged us $400.00 to make and assemble it. $450.00 I thought that was fair.

That’s not a bad price. I bet people who don’t feel comfortable tearing a trans apart to replace the tail shaft would grab this bolt it on and be on their merry way. I have a 4L 80E from a 4WD and am looking to swap it in to my 2002 Trans Am, but my trans needs to be rebuilt. So I will just replace the shaft and housing. I can see a real big market for these.

You don't need the Output Carrier, Sonnax makes a OSS Reluctor wheel to press on a 4wd Carrier, part# 34880-01, Sells for around $25.
2wd Output shaft
2wd Orifice cup plug
extension housing
OSS sensor

Thanks clinebarger I did not know that the 4WD Output Carrier did not have an OSS reluctor wheel on it. Where does the 2wd orifice cup plug go? I have only built one 4L80E and that was a long time ago.

2wd Orifice Cup Plug with seal....Lubes the extension housing bushing, A new one will come in the "Paper & Rubber" kit...
4wd Cup Plug with no seal, To remove....I find it easiest to drill a small hole in the cup plug & use a small Dent Puller to extract it.
performabuilt mentioned plugs in the ATF return holes in the rear of the case on 4wd models, I have never ran across this before? Not that I convert 4wd 4L80E's to 2wd's everyday but have done quite a few & very observant when converting anything. The above pic of a '04 4wd version has no plugs?, I have a '99 4wd core at work, I will check that one. Don't have any '92-'96 4wd cores to check.....

Is there any side effect to running a 2wd case lube plug on a 4x4 swap over?? I have one im converting for a customer. Also can the rear speed sensor relucter ring be pressed off. I know its not needed in a 4x4 setup. Maybe use a freeze plug to plug speed sensor hole??? Freeeze plug for rear lube hole??

You definitely do not want to use the 2 wheel drive case orifice that was for bringing lube oil to the tail housing bushing. (Passage shown on right side of housing).
As long as GM has not discontinued the original parts...
There is a part number for a solid plug to replace the orifice as well as an output-shaft speed sensor/ VSS dummy plug.
and
Both a freeze-plug or after-market bolt in plug are also available.
Yes the reluctor wheel can be removed if you want to.
I actually hoard those reluctor wheels ever since Sonnax stopped producing an after-market replacement.
