From:Vig3200 to Midwest4000 to Yank PT4400 impressions
My car is a 2000 Formula. Heads, 224/563 cam, long tubes, edit, 3.73 and Nittos
With the Vig3200 the car slipped around town, but using idle flash it didn't hit the tires that hard. The trans was stock at the time and sluggish. I had the converter in before the head/cam install and it felt loose but not powerful.
A good street convertor but not hard enough for the track, to me.
After the head/cam I had the trans built with a TransGo, billet servo, Kevlar band etc.
Put in the Midwest which was just restalled to 4000/2.5 by them.
It felt nearly stock!
My rpms dropped between upshift, the car hit gears hard, and at the track it did flash to 4000rpm and my best 60 was 1.76
It is a great driver because it had no noticeable slipping around town. It did stall against the brakes to about 2500 and would smoke the tires from idle.
At cruise speed and flooring it the car would not really flash - but pull hard up the rpms. Also at mid throttle the car would shift quickly and lock up too soon. I punch the gas and it would stay locked - unless I really floored it.
It just felt too tight for me.
Today the Yank PT4400 is in. Out the driveway the car revs just to get moving
No more creeping at the stop lights. I hit the gas light and my tach went to 3000 and I upshifted without feeling a thing! The tach never dropped during shifts. I got to the open road and did a dead stop idle launch. Forget it
This thing hits so hard no chance of hooking with Nittos. Okay for a street car - just be careful nailing it
The tach flashed to redline and I had to back off. Shift extension went right to redline with the car in OD!
Cruising rpm at 65 mph is now around 3000, with the Midwest was 2400.
The converter never does the "locked, unlocked, locked" crap that both other convertors did. It just blows through the gears, let of the gas and it coasts, give gas to pass a car and it flashes up to 5000+rpm depending how far you push the gas.
The thing feels great. Smooth driving around town, high flash to hit the tires and launch, no weird lock up issues.
I love the PT4400
New track times to come after the 12 bolt and slicks for insurance

Damn that sounds insane. I have a Midwest 3400 2.0 stall and it hits pretty good. I'm thinkin after doing my headers and doing the rest of my suspension work that i either wanna step it up to a pt4000-4400.

Yup
I am not partial to ANY manufacturer here - I just try stuff until I'm happy.
All 3 convertors are fine buy very different. Figured I'd share the experience.
I went through this with my LT1 car and ended up with an Art Carr 4000 with a stock motor and 2.73 gears!
It had similar driving behavior.
I love when the stall let's the trans shift WITHOUT banging the car and it just pulls faster seemingly at the same rpm....on my ride home tonight a guy in a 3rd gen Z28 went with me and at mid throttle in 4rth at about 85 we were side by side and I went on. The tach planted itself at about 5600 and my car just pulled away
85 miles and the fuel tank needle barely moved from full too - so no loss of mpg either

What launch technique?
What rear gear were/are you running?
I'm 3.73, was considering 4.10 but with the Yank on the street I don't think I'd wany them aymore.
With the other convertors I'd drive around in 3rd even on the highway to keep my rpms up around 3000. With the Yank, it's usually around 3000 unless Im off the gas on a downgrade or coasting. I tried driving in 3rd and it was ravved up a bit much...which is how it should be! I'm glad to leave the car in 4rth all the time and not be bogged down with the converor!
