Default 01 SS A4: car wants to keep moving forward when stopped but in drive

I just bought a 01 SS a few months back. I haven't really driven it much yet, but noticed one thing that's annoying me when I drive it. I feel like the engine is putting too much load on the transmission while stopped but "drive" is engaged. If I put the transmission in neutral and let it idle, the engine sounds like I'd expect it to while stopped - just a nice normal rumble from the exhaust and a quiet happy engine. When I have it in drive but am stopped (foot on brake) it's like the car still wants to lunge forward and you can hear the engine trying to get the transmission to "go". When I let off the brake, the car starts moving more than I'd expect it to without pressing the gas. It doesn't idle particularly high, though when it is in drive and it is loading the trans while not moving, perhaps the RPM's are higher than they should be.

This car is mostly stock, just headers/exhaust and a tune (before I purchased it). I don't know if it's something that needs to be adjusted in the tune or what but I owned another A4 Camaro (4L80e) and it did not do this when I drove it.

Just trying to get an idea what might be causing it so I can address it, run it by the tuner, etc.

Maybe Idle is higher then normal.
It could have a little hotter cam in it and needs a looser converter.
The 80e may have had a higher stall thus less drag on engine so I don't know if that's a apples to apples comparison.

I've had convertors go bad where they don't "Stall" at idle and they keep pushing you even when stopped. However usually when you have that problem you would also see a drop in RPM or the car would actually stall at lights. Hopefully that's not the case here. If you don't have a high idle problem maybe that converter just has a really low rpm stall and your not use to it.

"maybe that converter just has a really low rpm stall and your not use to it."

This is what I'm thinking.

Hell, my 8" 5k converter creeps !

It's completely stock aside from headers and exhaust, so I don't think a cam or aftermarket converter is in play here.

It does not die at idle (neutral) or while in drive (with brakes), it idles great it just wants to "go" while it's in drive.

I took a video switching back and forth from drive to neutral and then finally park. when it's in drive you should be able to hear the groan of the engine trying to move the car.

I have to be honest with ya, it sounds totally normal to me.
Almost exactly like my 04 5.3 sub.
The tach looks like it barely moved.

Maybe it's been long enough since I drove one of these it is normal, I dunno..I don't think so. None of my other cars with automatic transmissions push like this and I certainly don't remember my old one wanting to lunge forward while in drive. My phone didn't do a good job capturing the audio but there's a pretty big difference in the way the car sounds when in drive but on the brakes vs idle.

To me that also looks totally normal. The car is supposed to move, while in drive, when off the brakes. Maybe there's something wrong with your brakes?? Oh, don't try & compare that car to different model cars. Every, other model, car I drive feels different.

I realize it's supposed to move some when you let off the brakes...but it starts taking off more than what seems normal to me. I've owned several different fbody's and I would've remembered if the others did this.

if you take your foot off of the brake, how fast will it go without touching gas?
Idle speed looks good. very well could be a converter issue. Time to get that SS3600 yank. LOL

more than just a crawl, I haven't actually clocked it yet. I have to ride the brake to keep from entering my flat driveway too fast.

it's getting a 4l80e at some point when I do a turbo build, but planned to just drive it as is for a year or two first.

I'm with these guys. Based on that video, everything appears completely normal. But, of course, it's not exactly the same as being there - and you say that you're familiar with these cars, and that something seems wrong to you based on previous experience. So perhaps the idle speed was raised during the tune (not sure why that would be done for headers, but it's not impossible as you mentioned that the car has been tuned.) The stock idle speeds for every A4 LS1 F-body from 1998-2002 was 650rpm in P/N and 550rpm in gear. You can't rely on the stock tach as they are notoriously off by 50-150rpm (all of mine have been) at idle. You'd really need to get a scanner to confirm actual engine speed at idle, and then you could also check commanded idle speed to see if this was changed during the tune.

Or get a cheap blu tooth OBDii dongle from Amazon and download Torque from the app store. You can then see what your true RPM is. Who knows, maybe it was bumped somehow during a tune you're not aware ever happened.

Yeah, I have one. I'll check it out. It doesn't feel like the RPM's change at all, just that the car wants to move forward.

had my car out yesterday, the idle is set to 850 because of my cam, but I do have a SS3600 and 3.73 gears. At idle, it will go 15 mph if I let it go and build up speed. But no sign of pulling through the brakes when stopped.

What is the vacuum level at idle?
If below 15" it won't provide much power assist to the brakes.
Be sure there is a working valve in the vacuum line going to the PB booster as that valve helps the booster hold the highest recent vacuum level.
An auxiliary vacuum canister might help.

That only happens to me sometimes, and only when the engine is cold. As soon as it warms up, its perfectly fine.
