Default Trans Problems

My transmission started having trouble last night. When I push in the gas from a stop, the car accelerates just fine, but when I hit third gear, it's almost like it's in neutral--the rpm's go up freely, but little or no acceleration. It does this in third and fourth gear. It will occasionally lock up for a moment, then it does the same thing. It seems to have no problems in 1st or 2nd, though. I don't hear any kind of grinding noises - the only noise I hear is an occasional quiet rattling noise. Any idea what this could be? Torque Converter? Transmission? Thanks for any help.

How much money would I be looking at for a rebuild?

$500 basically for just the parts, and upwards of $1500-$2000 for a highly reputable company to get it done. I was quoted $1400 from a good shop. It all depends on your area though. I just went and bought a used trans with 30K miles for $500 and called it a day.

Why don't you just save that $1500- $2000 and buy yourself a tranny thats not going to crap out on you again. TH350/400 4L80 ect. I did the entire swap froma t-56 to a th400 and it cost me $2050. Tranny, crossmember, torque converter, driveshaft, shifter, torque arm. You won't regret it.

Well, I've decided I'm either going to get a used 4l60E and put it in (this would cost $700 for parts and labor), or put in a th350 or th400. If I get a TH, should I just get one from GM, or should I get one that's been beefed up?

Are there any computer issues with putting a th350 or 400 onto an ls1? Or is it just a straight bolt-up swap?

Your computer is not going to shift those tranny's. Thats why I had to buy a shifter (B&M Pro Ratchet). Also your speedo also won't work unless you buy these PN 8655291-speed sensor & PN 8655315-reluctor ring. These came off of the old SS454 that came w/ th400's. Then Ls1 edit will take care off the rest.
