How Much Hp...
I have a 2001 camaro SS with an 4 speed auto (4l60E) I was wonderin if any one could tell me about how much HP this trans can take before it breaks. I just hear all the time that autos are weak and i wanna know for sure... thanks

Horsepower is not really this trans killer, it is traction and torque. It is rated at "360"lbs/ft and can handle "610"lbs/ft. I broke my factory 4L60E running mid 12s, others have gone into the 10s. It can be a coin toss as to how long the 4L60E can last.

Thats what i'm wondering myself, I will be installing a 398 LT4 in probably a month or less and already had the 4L60E rebuilt once already. All new parts with Trans Go Full Race Shift it and a junky B&M 2400 stall, But i will be replacing that stall with a 3800. Don't wanna jump into it and just drive it normally and something happen.

I was wondering the same thing.right now I have LT hedders Ory LID loudmouth and a TCI 3500-3800 stall.Thinking of going with a cam (tr224) aswell I dont want to chance heads with the cam cuz just read a thread acouple of days ago where someone did that an the next day while getting gas then leaving his tranny whent, but anyways does anyone think I will be ok to add the cam? sorry to hijack this thread.

The stock 4l60 in my 99 lasted for 60,000 miles before I replaced it with a Rock-on. The car has had nitrous on it since it hit 10,000 miles. My dad and I beat the car to death, on the street and at the track. It also has heads and cam. It makes 420rwhp. Dave at Rock-on said it still looked good when he took it apart. I think the secret is good maintenance. just my 2 cents.

I added the heads and cam almost a year ago and when dave took it apart a couple weeks ago he wanted to know who built it last time because it looked good inside. I told him it was the one it came from the factory with and he was amazed.

It really is a coin toss with these. They are not unlike the 10 bolt rears, some last some don't. The last season before I blew my motor up I went thru 3 rebuilds on the tranny before I finally found the GM service pack. The 2-3 clutch pack was always the culprit for me. I would tear down the tranny and everything looked brand new except that set of clutches. The tranny was always the least of my worries when all you hear about is the weak 10 bolt. ****, I wish the transmission would have lasted as long as the rear considering I went through 4 transmissions and one motor running 11.5's and the rear is now in a car running the same.

my car was just a bolt on car, not even a cam, when the tranny went out the first time. the stock A4 trannies are junk. i wish i had never got an auto now. went through 4 rebuilds, and then finally a new one from GM. i should have gotten a swap kit for a m6 and been done with it.
