Default A4 with 3.42 gears vs 3.73 gears

I have 3.73 gears in my car and they are noisey. I am considering replaceing them with 3.42 gears. How are they with a 4l60e? I am hoping traction will bet better, better gas mileage, and more top end. Am I correct on what I should expect here?

I think that there won't be much of a difference. You can go to f-body.org/gears to get a chart to compare speeds in gears. IIRC, the difference at 80mph is 2500/2700 rpm. You might go down to 3.23 for a more noticeable difference.

I have the factory 3:23's and though everything I've ever learned at the track keeps saying go 3:73, I think I'll stay where I'm at. I do a lot of interstate driving. Maybe down the road with a cam/heads, converter I may go lower. With a bolt on car (flat low rpm torque curve) and tranny's low 1st gear, you really don't need steep gears if you want to stay highway friendly. IMHO Just throw a 3600 stall converter on factory gears and let it eat!

Yeah the 3:23's are great. I get good gas mileage and are steep enough to have fun with, around 2200 at 70
