Question Advice on converter choice (Yank SS3200 vs 3600)

Click on the thumbnail for a larger version of my dyno graph.

My Camaro is basically a cammed daily driver that sees long road trips, etc., with only occasional track time. Stock 3.23 gears. Bolt-on suspension mods (swaybars, LCAs, Konis, etc.). Street tires only. Right now I'm leaning toward the SS3200.

Get the ss3600,its tame untill you stomp on it.3200 is too small for a cammed car.

Agreed. I went from a Yank ST3500 to an SS4000 and there was zero change in daily driveability. All the differences were at WOT. The SS series are great DD converters in that they are nice and tight yet perform great. I would go minimum SS3600.

im leaning towards a 3200 stall. i know alot of people say go atleast a 3600 and such, but my car is a daily driver. its never gonna see the track. if it feels stock, than thats what i want. even certain sponsors have said, since it will never see the track the 3200 stall is alot better.

I would go with the 3600 for sure on a cammed car. A buddy has the 3200 and it feels very close to my TCI 3000 - both are with stock cam.

What are your cam specs? Your power under the curve is beautiful - perfect for an automatic car.

I have a Yank ss3600 on my daily driver with the stock Goodyear f1 tires. Its a good daily driver converter as far as how loose it is but traction is definitely an issue.

Cam is just an "old grind" hotcam (218/224, .525/.525, 112 LSA) with GM 243 casting heads and intake and exhaust bolt-ons.

JScamaro, what do you mean by traction issues? At the track?

Ideally you want your converter to stall between 500-900 rpm below the torque peak...Looking at your dyno graph I'd go with a 3600 minimum, probably a 4000...Peak torque looks like around 4700...If it were me I'd go with a 4000...My torque peak is at 5000 and I just re-stalled my Vig from 3600 to 4000 and it feels really good...These new converters are so efficient that its really hard to tell that the stalls are big when you're just driving around...but when you nail it....holy crap...

ss3200 is a waste of time even on a stock car...You will end up pulling it for something bigger....
I vote Yank SS4000 or better yet PT4000 and watch your car transform into a monster...

Your highway driving is unaffected by the stall a ss3200 and a PT4400 will both lock up just under 40MPH and allow you to cruise at the same rpms as stock IE 1800@60MPH

Can someone try and explain to me what the difference in driving is going to be between a converter with a 2.1STR and a 2.6 STR, etc. Right now, still running the stock converter, the car just goes on its own; I can completely let off the gas and I'm still just flying by other cars on the highway and I don't like that at all. Is that a good example of the looseness/tightness that we're talking about? I've never had opportunity to drive a stalled A4 so I'm wondering what changes to expect. Also I need to get my reverse gear back it's a bit of a challenge to keep from stalling the motor when shifting from park.

Damn, we need to get you on track here. Ok, without going into detail a stall with a 2.1str will feel a little looser and not hit so hard off the line and one with a 2.6str will feel a little tighter and hit harder off the line this is pretty much the same even if you have a 3200 or a 4400 stall.

About the tightness/ looseness thing, it has nothing to do with highway speeds or anything over 40mph for that matter because the converter will be in lockup (1:1 ratio with the engine speed), it is basically when you are not in lockup how much throttle you need to get moving from a stop or to keep you moving while not locked up (speeds under 40mph) with my SS3800 2.6str from a dead stop it will spin to about 2000-2300rpm under light throttle to get up to speed and once i'm up to the speed I want...let's say 30mph i'll spin about 1800rpm to stay at a steady 30mph.

Do some more reading there is plenty on this subject. I hope this helped some.

The most popular choice with your mods will be the SS3600 or if you feel this might be too much for you to deal with, we can do an SS3400 but with the SS3200 I feel as most will you will want step up soon after.

how about this i will sell you my ss3600 that is working perfectly so i can step up to a ss4000...it is an awesome converter and i wish i would have went with the ss4000...fyi if you want tightness and one of the best dd converters the ss is the way to go...

really the ss line should have a different rating for how tight it feels to other converters even other yanks...my ss3600 was not much looser than my dad yank tt3000...

i would say the ss line is about 200-300 tighter than any other converter...so if 4000 more like 3700-3800...

How much? Can't afford it ATM since we have a baby on the way. Just looking at future mods.

Those are some great SI numbers your car was putting down. What kind of suspension work? Can't wait to see what you run with the cam now, thats one of the highest cam only A4's I can remember seeing.
