My standard build on those used to be Raybestos, Borg Warner, or Alto red frictions and band.
A beast sunshell, .500 boost valve, .292 rev boost valve, vette servo, 3-4 adjusted not much more than .030.

There used to be a home made shift kit instructions around the internet somewhere that work well, haven't seen it in a long time. I'd get a transgo TV correction kit at the least or transgo jr shift kit.

Don't make the mistake of getting an 85 1/2 and up torque converter. Make sure the spline count matches the trans input.

This is in addition to the regular rebuilding stuff, like replacing bushings and worn hardparts, etc.

That would be an early unit which would have a small shaft , 27 spline .
The small shaft setup would have the early input sprag , which was not as strong as the later and would not be a good choice . The pump also would have smaller bushings to match the shaft size . All of the later ( '85/'86up) parts would retro fit and would be a recomended upgrade !!

So you think I should let this one go and get an 86+, or should i just replace the input sprag and the pump anything else?

I'd suggest upgrading the pump and input also. The rest is just readily available rebuild parts.
