(EndPlay Staff Reports) - The first 2012 Camaro ZL1 to be sold to the public fetched $250,000 in an auction as General Motors celebrates the original 1969 model.
GM announced that Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports and chairman of Hendrick Automotive Group, bought the car at the Barrett-Jackson auction on Saturday in Las Vegas. The sale of the car, offered by Fairway Chevrolet, Buick, GMC in Las Vegas, benefited the YMCA of Southern Nevada.
This particular car is the only 2012 Camaro ZL1 coupe to be produced with a carbon flash metallic exterior. It is also special in that it was the 69th ZL1 manufactured at the Oshawa, Ontario Assembly Plant and was produced as a tribute to the 1969 Camaro ZL1, of which GM only produced 69.
The modern ZL1 has a supercharged 6.2-liter, 580 horsepower V-8 engine with 556 lb-ft. of torque. It also has advanced, track-ready technologies such as Performance Traction Management and third-generation Magnetic Ride Control that Car and Driver said are Corvette hand-me-downs.
Some of the features praised by Chevrolet include Brembo brakes with six pistons in the front and four in the rear to help with stopping power. On the comfort side, the car has high-performance seats with microfiber suede inserts, available suede-wrapped steering wheel and shift *****, audio controls on the steering wheel and Bluetooth.
Camaro chief engineer Al Oppenheiser told Car and Driver that the street-legal, track-ready ZL1 "has more power than a Ferrari 458 Italia, more torque than an Aston Martin DB9, and a power-to-weight ratio topping Porsche's 911 Carrera GTS."
Auto Week , in reference to claims made by GM, called the original 1969 ZL1 the most elite Camaro ever with its all-aluminum big-block engine originally developed for Corvette race cars. While rated at 430 hp, GM said it produced more than 500 hp.
GM stated it was similar to Chevrolet's L-88 427 engine. That engine, though, had an iron engine block and aluminum heads. The ZL1's aluminum block cut more than 100 pounds off the weight of the engine.
Car and Driver estimated that the ZL1's base price will be at least $50,000, which puts Hendrick's bid about $200,000 over the top. Chevy spokesman Russ Clark told Auto Week that offering the car at auction was a fitting tribute to the original 1969 model.
