Cam advice/suggestions for stock 2005 5.3
Hi I'm a newbie around here as this is my first post. I'm currently doing a 5.3 foxbody(of course) and thought it was time to seek further help to acquire more knowledge. Okay enough rambling onto my car... I have a rusty notchback I'm restoring and swapping my 5.3 into, i am planning on using stock heads with a Vic jr intake. I haven't decided on a carb size yet. I am going to use a t56 for transmission, the car has 3.73 gears in it. It will be used to just drive around and have fun when it's nice out with a couple track days. So mainly a street car, I'm really looking for a nice mild cam for my motor that will still make the most power while keeping it very street able . I've looked into tsp 224 and 228 cams but my knowledge on cams is not what it should be, so for all you experienced guys out there please help me find what I'm looking for. I'm open to all suggestions and willing to switch the set up as far as intake and gears. I'm gonna go with an off the shelf cam right now. Also I would appreciate spring/pushrod along with the suggested cam. Thanks in advance! Looking forward to joining the lsx scene!

Folks like to talk down about it but I'm pretty happy with my comp thumpr cam in my 5.3 auto foxbody. It's a great sounding cam that runs great in a light car with all the right mods. It's also the cam that car craft put into a stock carbed 5.3 and made 430hp to the crank.
With your stick shift the somewhat finicky idle nature of this stick wouldn't be an issue

Aluminum 5.3 241 heads all stock.
Performer rpm intake
Holley 670 CFM street avenger
Stock length pushrods (verified with a checker)
PAC 1218 beehive springs
I'm sorry I have no hard numbers yet. As mentioned above its a build in progress the car is at the stage now where it's EXTREMELY traction challanged

Look for a tight LSA ( around 110 ) and durations in the low 220s. With the stock heads, big lift numbers wont do much more than eat springs, so mid .5s should be enough to get some air moving. There is a GM ASA cam for sale in the classifieds I saw a few mins ago. 226-236 on a 110 and lift at 525. Its a pretty radical lobe setup, but with your manual and gear, it should be a blast in that light stang !

Same here, my car is still a while away from even running.. But I want to make sure I buy the right parts for my setup/ goals so I'm not buying twice. What is the lift/ duration on your cam? I noticed they offer the thumpr with different specs. I also forgot to mention, I plan to use nitrous on this motor eventually. Nothing crazy just a 100-150 shot. So I'd like to get a good nitrous cam in there the first time around

All I got from that was you need 4.10 gears with that t56. It will launch better and be a touch more fun.
Otherwise, use whatever is out there that makes you happy seeing the idle quality and results you are looking for. I'll know how this single patten 220/220 cam does in a little bit.
