Default 5.0 305 camaro owners

im looking into buying a 83 camaro with a 305. how strong are the 305 motors. i am going to be rebuilding it with forged internals, might boost it. im wondering if its worth it or if it would be better just to build a forged 350. any help thank you

Some people will try to tell you that the 305 is good for modding, but honestly the 305 just make a good boat anchor. Build a 350 you can make more power and the parts are easier to find and cheaper.

350! You will probably need a completely new engine tho. No reusing heads and stuff cause I heard that the cc are too small for the stroke?
BTW whats the actual difference between a 305 and 350. If stroke is the only thing then you stroke it and even go to a 383 if you want, but I don't know the differences with the engines.

don't dog the 305. i used to have a 91 rs with one, grant it, it was the most underpowered pos on the road, but no matter how much a beat the $hit out of it, it never missed a lick. i know where there is a 307 makin about 375 to the flywheel, according to a desktop dyno. CHEAP!!! pm me if your interested. though montana is a little bit of a drive from where i'm at.

on a 305 the bore is smaller like 3.76 or somehwere close to that even putting good stuff in to it and a good set of heads it still wont make the power or be reliable at any decent power levels go 350 save your self a huge headache

Besides a crate 350 is what $2000 and a used one that need a quick rebuild is probably $500-$1000 and when you get one get one with 4 bolt mains cause the 305 prob. has the 2 bolt.

People have made power with a 305. There's a guy on thirdgen.org who ran low 12s with one NA.

That said, get a 350. Just don't try and run a T-5 behind it.

You can make power with any engine, but is it cost effective? I wonder how much he payed to get that thing to make power?

I lost to a bone stock 4 cylinder honda with my 91 RS 305. It was a pig!! They are a tank though, extremely reliable but they have no nuts.

I had a 91 RS with a stock 78 305 short block, 98 vortec 350 heads, 28 year old crowler beast cam 480 lift, edelbrock rpm intake (none air gap), edelbrock 600 carb, complete MSD kit, stock t5, stock rear end, no SFC and a 26x9 MT slick. It ran a 13.45 at 101mph leaving at 6,k and bogging down when it bit. The car run good but the carb sucked ***, with a locker, gears, holley carb, and some massive tuning i believe the would have hit high to mid 12.s.

I know 13.4 is nothing to jump for joy about but when you have $300 in a scrap yard motor and running with some stock LS cars and smoking stock LT cars i was happy. On top of that it would ****** the front left off the ground just enough for the sun to shine through lol.

R/T .014...........R/T .239
60' 2.072...........60" 1.982
330 5.824...........330 5.845
1/8 8.848...........1/8 8.937
MPH 80.71...........MPH 79.32
1000 11.476.........1000 11.607
1/4 13.452.........1/4 13.851
MPH 101.83.........MPH 98.72

As you can see it bogged bad when it hooked. Still not bad for a 305/t5 car with a stock gear and one wheel peel.

Buy the cheapest rear shocks you can and keep them by your recliner so when you watch TV you can play with them. After about a week of messing with them put em on the car and get a nice sticky tire and see how it does around a 3,800 launch then keep going up till you feel like it might start doing damage. I know what everyone says about the trans and rear end breaking but i left at 6,k for a year on slick with everything stock and the car is still driving around today. A friend of mine has a 706 BBC in a 80s Malibu and run the stock 10 bolt into mid 9.s before he swapped it out for a 12 bolt and it didnt break but he didnt want to kiss the wall when the axle broke at the hub. I guess you can say its all luck on breaking stuff cause every weekend someone breaks something with a stock/mild car.

Look at it this way, when it breaks you have the chance to upgrade.

As a former third gen owner with a 305 take my advice and have another engine ready. The 305 is gutless as hell. I swapped mine out for a 383 stroker crate motor with an Edelbrock carb and intake. That thing ripped down low

I read an article once in Chevy Performance, they took a 305 and pulled 385 HP out of it...that's flywheel not rear wheel. It had a monster of an air intake, demon carb, flat top pistons, a voodoo cam, and absolutely no belts, everything electric on the front. That goes to show you what you can possibly achieve, I do agree with everyone on their durability though. I used to be going 90 down the highway in the IROC and slam into 2 and run it up to 10k rpms, that was 10 years ago with 180k miles, she currently has 243k on that original motor and that thing still fires up on the first start! No re-builds or anything...unbelievable but the damn thing is a tank!

had a 89 rs with the 305, loved the thing but was just as slow as these other guys were saying. i put that thing through hell and it always asked for more though. i took the speed gov. off of it once to see what i could hit on it, ran with a vette and hit about 135 in it, not bad for 170hp.
