Default 93 Z28 overheating

So im having an overheating issue with my 93 Z28 camaro and im hoping that someone smarter than me can help me out. So whats happening is i can start my car up and within a couple of minutes its up to operating temperature(140-160ish) and the needlr keeps going up. Sometimes not much higher, sometimes up to the red zone (220-260 ish) then itll drop the temp back to the operating temp. None of the other gauges change or the motor doesnt change sounds or anythiny. So i thought that was just the thermostat so i replaced that and it keeps doing it. I did check to see if it was throwing any codes and it was showing code #23 saying "intake air temperature sensor. Temp too low" Some of the wierd thing going on with this is that it doesn't happen all the time id say maybe 9 time out of 10. Oncr the temp drops it doesnt go go back up til i shut the car off. When it is overheating the heater blows cold air but once the temp drops it blows hot air. Ive talked to friends of mine and ive heard it could be a head gasket. My oils blackish brown. Not milky like ive been told. Ive been told it might be a watet pump, a bad sensor, im not surr what it is. If anyone had any ideas or advice id really appreciate it. Thanks.

I would check the water pump, or it could be your temp sensor on the driver side head. That might be going out as well. But realize, the LT's generally run around the 230 range when sitting still. But check the obvious, coolant level as well. I'm sure you have already. I never really had a problem over heating when I had my LT. Plus, I also had a 160 temp. LOL!

Ok. Thanks for the advice. hatsWhats the way to check the pump and the sensor? And the remp usually sat at 140, maybe up to 160, and that was in summer. Its only been doing this the last 2-3 weeks.

Huh... So you do have the 160 thermo.? Not really a good way to check the pump or sensor. I would just replace the sensor. I think there only like $15 or so from O'Reilys or Advance. As for the pump, has it ever been changed? I would just replace it. If you got the dough. Better safe then sorry. Then by doing so, you can eliminate those from your issue. Remember, when replacing the pump, it runs off your cam. So don't lose that piece that attaches the cam end piece to the back of the pump. I had that happen to me. Not fun. It is possible to buy a bad thermostat as well. Had that happen also. It might not be opening. Let me kno if you need any more help.

I got the stock thermostat. The guy at autozonr didnt give me any options. I still have the recipt so i might replace it again. Is there any special procedure to replacing it?

If that doesnt work ill do the sensor then hopefully i wont have to get to the pump..

Another possibility is the steam/vent tube assembly on the backside of the heads is clogged up or gummy from coolant. Remove, inspect, clean reinstall or completely replace with AN fittings and hose.

Yeah, the tubes run from back behind the intake to the front. They are hard lines on the passenger side. Can't miss em'. Probably the easiest way to get to them is to take the intake off.

LOL! That's a good question. Maybe soak it in some kind of rust remover or something. Not too sure on that one.
