Default BADNBLK 91 Z28 is going LS1

Been a member here a while and lurked around and stuff. I have been dreaming and drooling over LSX swaps for many years, but it has some how always been out of reach, but I finally was able to run into a deal of a complete ls1 Z28, so yeah here I am.

The car... 1991 Z28 305 TPI with now 128k miles and 305 TPI. Was originally a 5 spd, but 8 years ago or so I converted to T56. The car has been an all around car... Drag raced, autocrossed, and showed. Really been trying to make an all around car with it.

The donor car: 1998 Z28 A4 with 101k miles... totally effed up body wise!

The plan - tentatively at this point

- Use the stock bottom end and f-body pan, acc, harness, and ecm.
- Since the 98 has the crap perimeter bolt head I plan for heads, cam, and intake upgrades.
- I will be converting my LT T56 to LS T56, and may send out the trans for upgrades at that point.
- I plan on using my factory gauges.
- Removing all emissions parts.
- Long tube, and might look into doing a Kooks true dual set up as they are release for third gen.

So that's my plan and list for the time being. At this point we are stripping the donor car and I'm starting accumulate the parts I will need along with cash for the upgrades. It will be probably after the summer season that I tear into the 91 and hope to have it running for the spring of 2015. I'm sure I will be on here pestering with noob questions and such as they come up.

Suggestions and tips are totally welcome.

Brandon

I agree! Prices on these cars in clean near original or original condition are going way up, and as the big boy parts manufactures start making more goodies we will see more high end builds only snow balling the trend. Just glad to be working on new motivation for this one!

Love it. I am so enticed to find a clean swap candidate especially since they are starting to appreciate. I just don't have the room

Bummer about the lack of space. I agree on the platform comment for sure. I love these cars.

Little update. I ran into another Craigslist deal and picked up a running 01 Trans Am 5.7 T56. So might just sell off the other car posted above and use this as my builder.

01 is better with the 241 heads and the ecm.

Thanks man. My little 305 has done a great job, but it's just never been enough. I gotta sell off my convertible before I start going crazy buying parts.

So pics of the update I posted a couple days ago.

Here is the "New" donor... 01 Trans Am 5.7 T56

Really can't believe my luck on finding TWO running LS cars for dirt cheap in a matter of weeks. I watch the papers/CL/ and wrecking yards regularly... So excited to start buying parts.

I don't know about the cheap part, but you sure did get a lot of DIRT with that Trans Am! Good Lord!

You ain't kidding! People lived on the edge of a gravel pit down 10 miles or so of dirt road. When I loaded it up 40 mph winds, my hair looked almost like that air filter! LOL!

Thanks man! I'm excited to move forward with it too. I imagine this page for the time being will be lots of pics of new parts and progress of engine "build" until the fall, then I will rip the old TPI out and hopefully be ready to drop in the LS

I'm gonna use a 1" set back motor mount plate, but wondering what brand people ran, if price is the only determining factor in why you bought one brand over another?

Man I would love to have a tpi m5 car. They were cool. No way I could tear it apart. How well did you get the tpi motor to run?

With that said my buddy just put lq9 in a Iroc. It runs good.

It is and has been a very fun car. It has always ran stronger than most up here in our thin air, but the best 1/4 time was a 15.01 @ 94 (I think?) with some good wheel spin. I had drag radials on it for a bit, but never got it on the track with those on... I'm stoked to tear it apart. It will only be better from here

I'll look into it. I know there is two designs most are using. The plates or the complete conversion mounts. Seems like most use the adapter plates for cost savings. I plan on using my stock k-member all chopped up for a/c and rear pan clearance, so plates probably make the most sense until the time for a tubular K come up.

Appreciate the input!

I didn't see this coming! BUT, I understand why you are doing it.

I'd keep it as stock looking as possible(no hood, stock gauges, etc) with the only difference being the LS1/T56.

i agree on selling the LT1 T56 to someone wanting to swap a thirdgen and doing the entire TA drivetrain into the 91...
