Camaro What does it mean?
#3
Old French dictionary: camaro = friend or comrade like stated above. Also caused some consternation in latin countries due to comparison to "camorones" (sp?) or Spanish for shrimp.
Did you know that the original name of the Camaro was to be Panther? Chevy even had leaping panther badges made. All this is in the latest Hot Rod or PHR. I get both and am at work + can't remember which.

The Panther as well as a bunch of stories about development of the Camaro are in the May 07 copy of PHR starting on page 56. The pictures of the early prototypes are fantastic. ...Car Life, March 66 - Chevrolet's Panther ...Can it catch a Mustang? Check out the 2 segment (left side) and 3 segment (right side) tail lights on the car in the picture at the top of page 63. Leaping Panther design can barely be seen on the bottom of 3 shots on the right side of page 61, on the lower part of the fender behind the wheel well arch.
