Default LS1 or LS2 ???????? ..................

I know this is a newbie question, I searched and it didn't pull up anything I was looking for. I come form the diesel performance crowd.

Car 1995 Nissan 240sx

I want to do a LS/t56 swap. But I dunno if I want to go with the LS1 or LS2.
I want to do all the normal mods internal, bolt ons, Ect.... and may be later down the road put on a super charger or turbo(s). Which LS has a stronger platform to build from, cheaper to build, most reliable (Modded), aftermarket support, ect.
Also this build will be on a budget.

First of all i love what your doin strong motor in a light car and slappin the import crowd in the face. They are both a very strong motor the LS2 is prolly gonna be your winner here based simply on displacement. if you look at cars like the gto with the ls2 it had 345 rwhp as opposed to my ls1 that came stock with 315 at the flywheel. Both have a large aftermarket to choose from so there is no problem with upgrades or tech support its just gonna depend on your budget and which ever one you decide you like better. If it were me i would go with the 6 liter LS2 over the 5.7 liter LS1 and then down the road screw the supercharger look into the sts rear mount turbo system it absolutely kicks a$&

for the swap you'll have better luck with a ls1 and cable driven throttle body and they're usually cheaper then ls2 blocks. Just try to find a totalled out 04 GTO and get the best cam, good block, all the upsides of having an LS1 and you'll have all the accessories and stuff.

Yeah thats the plan I can't stand the import crowd with the coffee can mufflers that sounds like a weedeater haha.

I always have wanted an FC RX7 with a cammed LS1 and a duals with fart can mufflers.....frickin sweet. Have the look of the typical import but run everything off the road.

To answer the primary question that the OP has - the LS1 & the LS2 are essentially the same engine, the primary difference - as twelver noted - is that the LS1 is a 5.7L, while the LS2 is a 6L engine. (Really not a huge difference, but worth noting.)

Just as a real quick reference for you, here's what Wikipedia says about how the LS2 differs from the LS1:

The LS2 was introduced as the Corvette's new base engine for the 2005 model year. It also appeared as the standard powerplant for the 2005 GTO. It produces 405 hp (302 kW) at 6000 rpm and 400 ft·lbf (542 N·m) at 4400 rpm from a slightly larger displacement of 6.0 L (5,967 cc/364.1 cu in). It is similar to the high-performance LS6, but with improved torque throughout the rpm range. The LS2 uses the same "243" heads as used on the LS6, but a smaller camshaft, the increase in torque is provided by the additional 18 cubic inches compared to the LS6.

I would pick the ls2 if you have the extra funds,but you can shop around and find an ls1 much cheaper usually.Nothing wrong with an ls1 or ls6 either,but the best bang for your buck is an ls1.There are some great deals out there if you take your time and look.Try to buy as complete a setup as you can,its the best bargain.You buy a naked motor and have to buy all the accessories one piece at a time it will get up there in a hurry.

The LS2's have improved oiling any typically better flowing heads. They also have better ignition coils. All things that may matter with a forced induction motor.

If you are going to go to power adders later on, consider using one of the 6L iron block SUV or Truck motors. Way cheaper than the LS2 or even the LS1. Everything bolts onto them, some even have the good heads. Adds about 80 pounds over the aluminum blocks. Something to consider.

wow i didn even see that i wrote licks a$& lol i def meant KICKS a$& and for the more budget minded person out there the sts is great and you wont lose power as in a centrifugal sc, it will always be there when you want it (assuming a speed bump doesn claim it or the pipe) sure there are better ways to build more power but that takes alot more money and sts is basically a bolt on tune and go deal it can be done in one day and doesn take a genius to do it

and i def agree with stu cool if your going to go with power adders and be serious about it then you will want the iron block, 80 pounds isn alot of weight to be adding when you consider the added strength of the block
