Default Best way to keep stock gauges and gain overdrive in a 72 A-Body

I have a 72 Skylark that I plan on a 5.3 or 6.0 swap in. I would like to keep all the stock gauges in working order

I have read that there is a speedo cable adapter for the 4l60 E but the adapter almost costs as much as the tranny would.

I was also looking at a 700R4 to keep the cable driven speedo
I believe all I need is an adapter and bolts for the torque converter.
Is this an option that is suggested?

What would I need to keep the other gauges working or is it better to go with new gauges when it is said and done?

Thanks in Advance,
Chris

go to jagsthatrun.com, I think they have the adapter you are talking about.

In my Oldsmobile I used the Cable-X converter that turns the electrical signal into a mechanical output, you just hook your VSS signal to one side and speedo cable to the other, with power and ground it works great. For the column shifter I just readjusted it and used the TH350 "C" lever for the selector on the trans. Granted mine is a 4L80E but same principle as a 60E. The gear indicator works as it should up from P-R-N-D, then it gets wrong but its easy to figure out what gear your in becasue you can feel it in the gear shift. I can still get into 1st by just putting the selector below low. Its not accurate but works. You will need to adjust your nuetral saftey switch and ignition switch for proper operation also.

+1^ I hooked the 4l60e to my column shifter linkage. Only thing you do is remove the fork from the original trans and put it on the 4l60. My works same as Ryan's and shift works doesn't make a four speed indicator for the olds dash. Besides no need to put it in any gear except drive. It shifts at rpm anyway regardless of what gear you have the shifter in. I added a micro switch to be engaged by the trans fork when in park for the PNP function. A new set of guages is cheaper than the box Ryan is using. That is why I decided against it. I wanted oil, temp, voltage, rpm, etc.. Mine only had idiot lights. Useless

200-4r no electronics, mechanical speedo, overdrive, and you can find them easy and built strong.

do you have a column shift or floor shifter?

I'm putting a 4l65e in my Skylark, but I'm not concerned withthe dash reading since I have a factory floor shifter.

I don't mean to hi-jack the thread but it bring up something I did not think about. How do you hook a 4L60E to the old style Speedo?

Outlaw 03 - You can convert the tail housing to use a speedo gear setup (browse the JTR site) or use the Cable-X converter (search internet).

when i orig installed a 4l80e in my chevelle, i used the Abbot x box for the speedometer-i made the trans man shift so i didnt need to buy a computer
i later changed v/b's so the trans was auto again, and i used the compushift
controller with the display-it has a speedometer feature built into the display, and once i setup the cal., it was dead on with the speedometer-do i could have really saved $310 and not bought the cable x box
if you want to use your orig gauges, you can purchase metric to pipe adapters, and reuse your old sensors
looking back, i prob would have built up a 200r, buti love the setup i have, i can make it do whatever i want

try hawks 3rd gen . The have a convertor box for 200 bucks. Not many 3rd gens came with electronic speedo.

Use the orginal sending unit from ur old motor and find places to put it on ur new motor.

To save money and time you can always buy the car parts from the wholesale suppliers around your locality.

The gas gauge should be the standard 0-90 ohm gauge.... if you get a correct sender, it will still work with your A-body gauge.

The 95 Impala tanks sender (0-90 ohm) that I have in my Chevelle works with my 71 chevelle gaugge.
