1969 Nova Ls1 T56: PICS LOADED
So I just completed my 7 week build of installing an LS1 out of a 2002 T/A with a T56. Here is SHORT list of what I have done. I will have to get some pics up to show what I did.
Cut and replaced tranny tunnel to fit new trans
Cut the floor brace and added new plate to reinforce the floor around the tunnel
Made trans crossmember
Cut the stock pan and welded it back up to clear steering
Built X pipe for exhaust
New 3.5" high speed balanced driveshaft.
New 1 7/8 Kooks stainless long tubes (big $$$)
Speartech did the wiring and ECM upgrade/programming - WORKED PERFECT!
255 LPH pump, in taken, with TANKS Inc kit (had to cut and TIG the tank)
Added mechanical speedo into the tail of the T56 - works perfect also!!!!
All new hoses with new aluminum radiator and dual Flex-a-lite fans
I also smoothed the fire-wall, cleaned the whole bottom of the car, put in new carpet, yada yada . .. bunch of resto stuff.
But, so far so good, runs like a top and screams like a bat outa hell!

If you added the mechanical drive yourself I would love to see a write up. I understand that it is a little involved but it would be nice to do it myself for less than $350. Also we definitely need some pictures.

I did do the mechanical myself. I will try and get some pics up tomorrow morning.
The mechanical drive was not easy but it was not the most difficult task in the build.
The hardest part was drawing the set-up in CAD, getting the dimensions and then blasting a hole in a $400 tail shaft housing! It really is a 1 shot deal. Also, it was not fun trying to weld the inset into the housing. Most conversions epoxy the insert and use a bolting tab to hold it. I did not like that so I welded it in.
But again, I will get some pics.

I bought the TransDapt motor mounts out of Jegs. They seem to work OK. I think I am going to re-make my own to move the motor back .75 inches.
The headers are Kooks stainless 1 7/8. They are about a grand but fit really nice and look great. I have had a lot headers for many cars and these are by far the best quality headers I have ever used.
The accessory drive is all stock from the '02 camaro. Everything fits except the A/C, which I will be notching the frame to get that in there. The alternator almost looks like it wont fit but it did by 1/2".
The trans cross-member I built. It is was very difficult to make so that the engine and trans sat level, I used the stock sub-frame holes. The real trick is building a cross-member that is strong, clears the exhaust AND can be removed easily.
Again, I will try to get come pics up.

I will get some pics. . . .
I cut up the Camaro pan, notched it, and welded it back up.
I am at about 5K miles so far. Only thing that has gone wrong is a muffler clamp came loose at about 100 MPH on I-90 going into Chicago! Scared the $hit oute me!
But I will post some pics today.
Oh, rear mount turbo this winter . . . .

I will post more pics of that tonight.
I did have to cut/weld the Tanks Inc kit to work. It was WAY too long and I could not clock it in the right direction to work with the fuel lines and the direction the "sump tray" sat.
It is successful. I have run the car down to 1/2 gallon and not had any stalling issues, only slight hesitation.

hi
I was wondering if you can send me the cad drawings you did for the t56 so I can try and tackle the cnversion myself. It would be a great help because on the last car I did I used the cable-x and could not get the speedometer to work so the car left with no speedometer and if I can do the conversion myself it will save me money
thanks Andy
