Default New, first LS engine, Swapping into Jeep, lots of ?'s

I'm new here. I am not new to engines in particular, just never had an LS. I currently have an 84 CJ5 with a 350 crate and love it. I just purchased a 1991 Jeep Wrangler YJ and I have a LS2 (or LQ4?) 6.0L out of a 2002 GM 1500HD that was wrecked. I am just in the process of swapping out the engine and have lots of questions that will be coming soon. In particular the wiring harness and which transmission to use. The 4L80E in the donor truck is too long so I would like to mate a 700R4 to it. Any pointers or thoughts on this project would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Start with the pirate4x4 5.3 Jeeps thread... 50+ pages of swapping 5.3/6.0s into Jeeps.

The '02 1500HD would have come with an LQ4 unless it had the VortecMAX option, in which case it would be an LQ9. You probably do not have an LS2.

I would go 6.0 / 4L60E because the computer can control the engine and trans. I did a 6.0 / 4l60E into a 99 wrangler. Great swap. Current ride is 98 Wrangler with a LS6 / 4l60E. Again a GREAT swap.

Have you ever figured out fuel ecconmy with it and or the previous set up? If so what gears are you running and what size tires?

Do you have any pictures of your set-up in the 99 wrangler? Which shifter did you use with the 4l60e and which engine mounts did you use?

For identification purpose or ?

You can get a basic rundown if you search Wikipedia for LS2 or LQ4. Some of the major differences include aluminum (LS2) vs. iron (LQ4) blocks, intake manifolds, heads, compression ratio, etc etc. Do some searching - this info is very easy to find.

The 6.0 got about 16-17 conbined driving. The LS6 is a little better due to the revised tuning I had done by Schwanke in Springfield MN.

The shifter I have in the 98 is a Lokar cable type fora 4L60 and works well on the 4L60E. 10" handle. Order it with an additional 6" length in the cable. Helps with routing around the transfer case.

I'm running 32" tires on the 98. 17" rims.

I made the motor mounts. Novak might have their revised TJ mounts done by now.

Thats awesome, what gear ratio are you running? That is way better then the 9-10mpg I am getting with my 33" and 2.73 in with my Crate 350, it is one of the 330hp rated ones.

Your swap looks very clean any other pictures of it?

This IS the nicest install I have ever seen. Every little bit of detail is in this truck. It was really fun to tune as well.

Thats awesome very clean install. Did you guys do dyno tune on it? If so how much rwhp did it put down? Is the engine stock with exception of the intake? What harness did you end up going with, or did you mod it yourself?

Didn't run it on the chassis dyno. LS6 heads and cam. 1.85 Comp rockers. Hooker headers. Very quick off the line.

got the engine out and grabbed a 700r4 out of the pasture. I am wondering if i need any type of adaptor to mount the 700r4 to my 6.0? I have also removed the wiring harness, it looks like a 300lb gorrilla about to jump on my back. Any suggestions for this. I'd like to keep my stock jeep guages if at all possible.

someone correct me if I am wrong but i believe that the 700r4 is like the th350 and will need the spacer for the flexplate for the torque converter since it will be set up for a sbc style. There are a few different versions of it out there from what I have read one is made by GM. Other than this it should be able to bolt up to the ls style engine.

Like I mentioned, Take a look at the pirate4x4 5.3 Jeep thread. There are ~60 pages of info on swapping these motors into Jeeps. Easily the best online resource out there for swapping a 5.3/6.0 into a Jeep.

I just got done putting a ls1 w/700r4 in a cj7, atlas II. the 700 r4 is controlled with a tv cable. The only issue I had was the 700 has a big pan that sticks out on the passenger side, so the front driveshaft had some clearance issues. the atlas is clocked horizontal, and had to do a little "shaving" on the pan. Bowtie transmissions has a lot of good info on their web site. good luck!

I have read on Pirate4x4 and posted in there, but its 67 pages and alot of information to try and sift thru. I'm really looking for other suggestions, if you combine the knowledge of alot of rock crawlers with the knowledge of drag racers, seems like you can have an awsome all around monster. I am looking for the wiring diagram for my 6.0L. Anybody know if the 5.3L wiring harness is the same as the 6.0L? Any help with this would be appreciated. I am trying to decide if i want to use my existing harness or buy a painless to run the engine.
