all I could read is: 0296Q9332320
block marked 6.0, head marked 317
said to be from a 2001 2500 pickup
Is it desirable?

The eight digit is read off the VIN not on the block. Do you have a VIN?
If a 2001 will have an EGR valve and be DBC. Also you can look for dished pistons to make sure its an LQ4.

It is DBC.
0296Q9332320 is engraved on the passenger side head.
as a small "knock"
they pulled it out Monday
I do not have access to the truck.
Is it desirable?

Based on the partial VIN it's an 2002 motor. Was there a date code cast in the front of the block by the water pump?
Its an LQ4 most likely given the DBC. And it's nothing special, but it is a 6.0L.

Where do I look for the date code and what does it look like?
Passenger side there was a single numeral and one letter, stamped in.
Was that it?
