alternator help
Ok I've searched but can't find what i'm looking for, if I just missed it somehow please forgive me. I have an 84 chevy short wide with a '98 carburated ls1 with a msd 6010. When i bought it the alternator was bad so I replaced it with a new one that worked for about five minutes then it went bad. My question is, how do I hook the alternator up. I ran everything just like it was. Its got the one wire on back of course that goes to the battery and has a plug with three wires coming out of it. One of the wires ran to a key on hot and the other two was cut and didn't go to anything. Its carbed so no computer. I would really appreciate any help

Thanks m6 and '81ta. one more question (hopefully) the wire that goes to keyed pos. only when key is turned, is that only when key is turned all the way to start it and then nothing when i let off the key when it starts? Or hot the whole time the key is turned away from off? I rewired my '42 international with one of them rewiring harnesses but it just has a '78 sbc. and even though when I was done it was easier than i thought it was still intimidating.
