Default 98 Z28 drivetrain into a 88 formula

What do I need to get, and what do I need to do? The 89 is a 5 spd car and my 98 is a 6 spd. Any help here is greatly apreciated. I will be attempting the swap myself here in about a month, thanks in advance.

Chris

No problem, alot of people read these, you can actually do a search in this section as well there are 3 or 4 Third gen LS1's here.

What about the rear end? I have the rear listed in my sig from my 98 and was wondering if it is interchangeable also. Couldn't find this in the search, along with my question reffering to the throttle cable. What cable is everyone using?

I'm using Lokar's LS1 throttle cable. I don't see why it wouldn't work for a 3rd gen. It comes pretty long and you just have to trim the end at the proper length. I can't help you on the rear end though.

I found the answer to the rear end question, and as far as that cable goes, it's made to be trimmed or no?

Yes. It's set up so that you take it apart, trim the cable, and put it back together. It looks pretty slick.

Same here w/ the Lokar cable. I added a pair of stainless steel fender washers and rubber washers at the firewall junction, just to seal off the engine compartment from the cabin. Also cut the pedal end of the cable off and used an oval-shaped cable end so it would fit into the plastic cup on the 3rd gen pedal.

John B's site was my single best source of information in prepping for my project. Start there.

You only really need Helms manuals for your car and the LS1 donor if you're doing your own wiring harness, in my opinion. I went that route, already had my '82 chassis Helms so I picked up an '01 Helms and fabbed my own "translation" harness between the '01 engine and '82 chassis connectors. Cost was the Helms, a $50 junkyard chassis harness from a '99 or whatever F-body, and $10 worth of junkyard connectors for the '82 side of things.

Other than these three sources, the search buttons here and on thirdgen.org were enough to get me 99% of the way there. One consultation with John @ Speartech regarding hooking up the cyl head coolant vent to my rad, a trip to Mufflex for a custom y-pipe and modified catback, and it was ready for the road.

It's not an easy project, but it's worth the trouble. Here are some shots of it from earlier this month at Pocono north, sneaking up on unsuspecting Z06 and M3 drivers...
