Default 1951 Merc finally arrived

I bought a '51 Merc custom from a dude in SC, and it showed up yesterday...

Some fone pics:

Has a SBC crate engine, looks nice, sounds like it has a little cam in it. I think a 402ci LS2 would be a nice addition.

I think you are right. Could you imagine a 402 with a nasty cam through those side pipes?

Awesome!!!!! I vote for the 402 as well!!

(I still believe in LS power.....even though it may not be HAMB friendly......just tell 'em it's a Cadillac motor, then everyone relaxes)

I love it! I vote for an LS with sidepipes and glasspacks.

My dad and I have a 52 merc we are in the process of building. It used to be my grandpas we built a hot merc flathead with a big erson cam, offy heads, sanderson headers and sidepipes. Can't wait to hear it. You car is a real nice one. What does it have in it for motorvation now.

Crate SBC carbed, TH350 automatic valvebody. Carb looks like a 600 or 650cfm, I don't really know it's been fifteen years since I messed with a carbed car.

Oscar I hear ya, I am on the HAMB just for exterior ideas at this time, like what to do about the bumpers and the grille.

Nice Merc man. You going to leave it as is, or personalize it? I've always been a sucker for the chopped Merc in teh movie Cobra that they flip through the boat.

P.s. I agree about the HAMB. There's a lot of good ideas and technical info over there, but some of those guys go off the deep end when traditional parts aren't used. If you're into bikes the Jockey Journal is a much better forum.

NICE!!! I've wanted to build one of them for a long time now. Bagged with some of those magnesium stips dangling from the back so it shoots sparks when the rear is slammed. I saw that at a car show years ago on a 50 merc in a flame thrower competition...wanted to do it ever since.

Mine is more chopped than the cars they used in Cobra. I'm going to change the bumpers out first, not digging into the engine until I've done a few things like weigh the car and figure out how fast I can make it with a stroker.

Awsome merc, GL with project. You really don't want to weigh it though, you'll just make yourself depressed.

I bet it is under 4000 pounds by a fair amount. Those old cars are not as heavy as you might think. Remember they were being pushed around pretty darn well by a 120 hp flat head.

Great looking car, can't wait to see how it turns out once you have made it yours!

The good:
-Crate SBC with reportedly 5K on it, looks nice, Edelbrock dressup items, and it sounds like it has a cam in it
-PW
-AC

The bad:
-Tweed interior
-Some body issues
-Bumpers are uber lame
-Doesn't have a 500hp LSx in there

If you do any bodywork on that car yourself, make sure you wear a respirator. Old rod builders used a lot of lead for bodywork and you really don't want to be inhaling that crap.
