Want to buy a C5 z06 ( Please read )
Hey guys, I am thinking about buying a C5 z06, possibly a regular C5. Currently I drive a 04 Cobra putting out 576RWHP (Whipple, Straight Axle, ect ect.) The whole Fix or Repair Daily theory is really coming to life for me right now. I want a car that can still run low 11's high 10's and stay together with a decent driveability. I have been thinking about a vette for the last 6 months and I want to know what I need to get to where I am now (1/4 mile time not power), and what the difference between an LS1 and LS6 are. I just want to know if it's really worth it to buy the Z06 opposed to a normal C5.
Thanks, Andrew.
Thanks, Andrew.

ls6 is a better built engine and its intake outflows the ls1. but on the other hand the c5 is faster by like 2 mph. there is a write up that will really help you about the vettes somewhere around here.

Stock a C5 Z06 will out perform a C5 ls1 in every category.(maybe not top speed)
I would vote for throwing a procharger on a LS1 or LS6 vette, I think it will give you the performance your looking for and still be reliable.

I know it will out perform, I wanted to get a little more technical, like whats the difference between the heads ect ect. Like would it be the same if I took the ls6 and put totally different heads on it, if it would be the same as a ls1 with the same heads.

The LS6 has a mild cam in it and the heads flow better. If you plan on doing heads/cam anyway, I'd say get the base vette, put in a bigger cam and get some ported 243 (LS6) heads and make some good power. The Procharger is a great way to go if you want to get into the 10's though. The Z06 does have a hardened output shaft in the tranny as well as better ratios so consider that in you decision. Most guys end up getting a drivers side hardened output shaft for the rear and the DTE brace for some extra insurance as well.
Good luck with your decision.

I agree..
The gearbox ratios in the Zo6 are.... p e r f e c t
The Zo6 is hands down worth the $premium looking at the the overall car... different caster/camber rates, stiffer springs/shocks, better tranny/ring/pinion, one of the best catbacks ever put on a production car (titanium), thinner windshield/glass to save weight, brake cooling ducts, and more horsepower right out of the box.
In addition to all that, the Zo6 has better.....resale value.

Agree, especially with the last part. Many of these same benefits can be had with the FRC as well (stiffer body, M6 trans = more time between shifts at high HP, 3:42 gears, etc.). If you're changing the heads and cam, then the motor differences are minimalized. Either way, the fixed roof body style is the way to go at that level of horse power. If you want a sunroof, get a sedan IMO.

Andrew,
This is dave from saturday night. If you want to drive my car some, or ride with me, then you can. I can tell you this, the z06 is worth every penny. It rides incredibly smooth, and the weight savings alone is worth it as well. There are many members here with a z06 running 11s with drag radials and a varaam intake, and the handling is insane. The green cobra i own has alot of suspension mods done to it, but it does not handle any where as well as the z06. The car really likes to take corners.
Hit me up and get my number from jake if you have any other questions.

the bare bare ls6 block compared the the ls1 block is essentially the same, the oil flows a little better but thats about it, if your gonna change heads cam and intake, it really doesn't matter ls6 or ls1

I think if you take a hard look at a C5Z, you basically have to want the FRC body style first... Some folks prefer the removable targa style.
I think the C5Z is very cool, and has strong resale, but the entry price is higher. Buy mine for $28K and I'll buy a new C6Z.

Andrew, when you get back we'll go look at some Vette's , I think you should go with the Z06, thats what I would get if I had the money, and if you end up getting one, dont turn it into a race car, I mean you know what I'm saying? you got the fox body that'll run 9's so..... I'll talk to you on Friday and be patient about the Z, find a good deal on a nice one :-)

I agree with ls1freak. Set a limit and go from there. You can beat alot of cars (and i mean built cars) with a z06 just because of the power to weight ratio. You can do this all while retaining great street manners.

The z is worth the extra $$$.
It is NOT just a different cam/heads.
Lighter. Better spings, shocks, sways. Better wheels. Better transmission. (m12>m6) Stronger rear end. etc.
I have never seen a stock m6 coupe run low 12s much less high 11s. A stock z06 is a high 11 car. And that's not just from 50 extra hp.
Get the z06, throw on some tires, headers, and a cam. Mid to low 11s easy. If you go all out head/cam/boltons/underdrive pulley/fast90/electric waterpump/etc. You can get into the 10s on a stock block/stock cube head/cam car.
Or just throw on a blower.
The transmission in that car really is awesome combined with 3.42 gears. Totally different ratios than the m6 in standard 6spd vettes.
