Put it in 3rd, put your foot on the brakes, and rev the motor until right before it starts to creep. When the light turns green or the hand drops, let off the brakes and floor the gas quickly the rest of the way down if you have good tires. If you have the runflats still or another crappy tire, let off the brakes and over the course of 1-1.5 seconds press the gas all the way.

Just practice late at night and find the right technique for you. But definately use 3rd if you're on the stock transmission. Never go WOT in 4th. Don't manually shift either. That just takes away the advantage of using an a4.

What!?

Are you referring to revving in neutral and then putting the transmission in gear?

I hope not!

Simply put the selector into 3rd and hold the brakes with very light throttle until you can feel the brakes being overpowered.... THAT'S the rpm you launch at.

AMEN! Never neutral dump an automatic transmission, unless you like mopping and sweeping up tranny fragments.

Also get a good higher stall Torque converter...

numerous threads have discussed the manual shifting.
the best outcome is to just leave it in D and go

Are you kidding? This is one of the most FUN things to do.. in a rental car!!!

Second most fun thing to do... throw it in reverse when traveling about 30 mph. It really shutters those ford taurus'.

You'll have to find the sweet spot for your combo. I don't go by RPM, but feel.

After doing a burnout I pull up to the tree, put the car into drive (D), hold down the foot brake, engage the emergency break, slowing start bringing up the RPM and then bring it up until the brakes wont hold the car. That'll tell you what RPM you can launch at. At the last set of yellow lights I release the emergency brake and foot brake and then roll into the throttle.

Good luck.

with a stock converter, you'll likely only be able to powerbrake to around 1400 to 1500 rpm; and that's a good place to launch from

on a stock PCM program, it's been rumored for years that placing the A4 into "3" allows the engine to wind-out more ( about 200 rpm more) during WOT shifts.

Every car/set up is different. I get my best 60' (1.45) from idle
