Default First time at track. Did I expect too much?

Well, I took my 2000 Trans Am to the track for the first time. Went to Milan Dragway in MI. Only thing I have done is a SLP lid, GMMG and a short stick. I wanted to get a baseline run before I install my headers. Here is my first run....

Reaction -- .3829
60 ft -- 2.22
330 ft -- 5.96
1/8 ET -- 8.97
1/8 MPH -- 81.84
1000' ET -- 11.52
1000' MPH- 95.57
1/4 ET - 13.70
1/4 MPH - 104.21

I made 6 runs. This was my second and best run. After that, my ET keep getting worse. Up to 13.96.

Best ET was 13.70
Best MPH was 105.08

I feel somewhat disappointed. Should I have done better? I was thinking the whole time I'd be in the 13.3 to 13.5 range. I know with street tires, 60' times will be hard. Plus this being my first time, I had to try to find the best launch technique on a stock 10 bolt. A lot of people I've talked to said Milan is really hard to hook and that I may have better luck at Norwalk. If somebody could take a look at those #s and see if there is anything I can try different or something that looks promising. Thanks.

Well it would help if you stated what the atmospheric conditions were on that day. You're not gonna run respectable times in 80-90 degree temperatures. If you want to run a 13.5 sec. pass just run it sometime near the winter time, provided the track is open. LS1's love the cold air. That said i'd say your times are the norm. I pulled the same time in my car in 80 degree temps at 1300 ft. elevation and about the same mods.

Now the dudes that are at E Town and Sears point will chime in on their 12 sec. passes in negative density altitude. :p

You really think it was 80? When the backwind was blowing, seemed the temp dropped a lot. It was rather humid. Killer storm rolled in and rain started pouring. Would have liked to have a little time to cool down, but those are the breaks I guess.

Don't feel bad. I just got back from the track.

It was reallllly hot and humid tonight. I ran a best of 14.193 @103.9

I think my problem is that i'm retarded. I couldn't launch worth Shiat. Best 60' was 2.431.

Yeah that 60' time is killing you. Then again sometimes it's due to track prep. I know at LACR they'd rather spray dirt then VHT.

What kind of mods do you have? Interested to hear. Trap speed seems pretty good.

For my VERY first time at the track, I tried a couple of different techniques for my launch, but didn't seem to have much effect. Best 60' was 2.22. Worst was 2.39. Street tires just ain't doing it. The humidity was no doubt close to 100% when I ran. But I just got wind that we are having another track rental. I'm hoping to get my Kooks on by then, and see what I can do. But being it will be late June/early July, weather is definitely going to be a factor.

As for the VHT, how well does that help street tires? I mean, I know just the "quick spin to clean them off" bit, but will it help the non-warmed up streets bite a little bit more?

My mods are SLP: LM II, Smooth Bellows, Lid, K&N. Some MSD 8.5mm wires and a short stick. It's also a 00' M6.

I guess I expected too much. Car only had 48k on the clock. Problem was the track was so slippery. I need to just practice launching. Next time I get a chance, I'm gonna go on a saturday, when they actually prep the track. And hopefully that falls on a less hot&humid day.

I asked a fellow f-bodyer at the track for some advice. He told me not to launch at anything - track was too slippery. But what got me down a tad was he was running 13.5's all night with the same year and mods as me.

with good traction and drriving skills + the weather , u should run something between 13.0-13.4.

I ran 13.09 at 109mph with a 2.0 60` with free mods and lid .

Nice. Well. Hopefully I'll only get better. I also kinda felt bad running back to back runs. At one point I let the car cool for about a half hour. It just felt slow - you know. It was so hot out.

What RPM are all of you guys with street tires launching at? I can't imagine it being too high. Thanks!

On street tires I wouldn't launch any higher then 2K rpms, unless you plan on slipping the clutch.

Personally I know that I cut down my 60' time with 4.10 gearing alot. With 3.42's it was more or less just bog and go from 1200 rpm launch. With the 4.10's the car will take off like a raped ape if you get the launch just right.

On street tires I was launching the car at 2000-2200rpm with a quick slip of the clutch, This was at Milan dragway and resulted in a 2.05-2.08 sixty foot time.

Well. I wasn't even launching last night. I feel retarded. I just couldn't get it to hook up. I was only "launching" at 900rpm. I've practiced launching on the streets but it's just harder at the strip. maybe that would explain my best of 14.1. I'm also running michelin ps2's which supposedly have great dry traction. Oh well. practice, practice, right?

It took a little bit of playing around to figure out exactly how to come out on street tires. For awhile I would either spin bad or come out super soft which resulted in 2.1-2.2 sixty foot times.

Is your car a M6 or a A4 ...you could do all the free mods to it and take the front sway bar off that should help you out some. The more seat time you get the faster you will be.

Practice is your friend here. I don't think 13.70s at 104 mph is bad at this time of year with your mods. 6-speed can be tricky to launch when compared to an auto. I've gotten a 2.00 60 foot on the stock Goodyear GSC's after a little practice with the mods listed in sig, but the auto makes the launch easier I'm sure!

I'd say 13.5-13.2 shouldn't be a problem with better air and a 2.0 60 foot time.

Good luck!

I went up to Milan for their opening weekend with a lot cooler temp and only managed a best of 14.1 at 103 bone stock. That was my first time there and was the first time with this car. The other two runs of the day I missed 3rd gear. A one armed monkey could have done better than me on that day. I would say that your numbers are pretty decent and I would also say we both need a lot more practice to get 60' numbers closer to Trigger1

The best thing you can do is practice and not be afraid to try different things. It's called test and tune for a reason! Try different rpm's, slipping the clutch, etc and see what works best for your car.

Well, I'm definitely going back on the next rental. Headers *should* be in first week of July. I still need to catch my bearings though. That being my first time at a strip was a little rough. While I was staging, I was trying to run through the techniques I wanted to try in my head. But as soon as I got fully staged, as I'm trying to get the RPMs where I want to launch, the tree is already on it's way down. How long of a span is it from when both lanes are staged until the tree starts? Like 2 seconds? I no more than glance at my dash and it's time to go. The phrase "Get it in gear." comes to mind.

Don't worry about the reaction time. Sit at the tree as along as you want, focus on what you are doing and then leave. It's not like you are there racing anyone.
