Default full tank or near empty when drag racing?

i have heard a lot of different things for racers. some say as little as possible to save weight, some say up to a full tank for weight back there. i am having traction problems ever with a full slick and am only pulling consistent 1.66 60' times. what do you all do?

As little as possible IMO.If your not hooking then your suspension or track or maybe both arent correct.Tweak it some more and see what happens.

I heard the pickup can run dry on a hard hook for a brief second or 2.
I would run 1/4 tank at most but no lower than a 1/8...

i usually run a little over 1/4th and cut 1.60's on nittos. But the time i cut a 1.58 i had 3/4th's a tank and ran a new best of 11.95 NA so go figure

who knows, i coulda spun instead of hooking. Or i mighta picked up another tenth on top for a 11.85

id just run a 1/4th tank and go from there

If the "check gauges" light isn't on, you have too much gas

If the "check gauges" light isn't on, you have too much gas ................doesnt that mean you are getting air bubbles in your gas line??? when i floor it w/ too little gas, i get that stupid ses light, and it doesnt go out for like 150 miles give or take.

Here you go boys,

I run a 1/2 to 1/4 tank of racing fuel and cut 1.52 60fts all day.

Good luck to ya!

I have been running a full tank because this is my first season and my friends said you get better traction, but I think I will try 1/4 tank and see.

Why would you ever intentionally add weight? That's crazy!! If you're not hooking then the track sucks that night - you have suspension issues - need better tires - etc. - etc. Adding weight is completely counter productive.

Exceptions might be a truck or something where the front/rear weight distribution is 70/30 but LS1's do not have this problem.

Dial your suspension in, get a right rear airbag (15psi), line up behind a car running full slicks, get some VHT track bite and have a buddy pour it on your tires before you launch, lower the air pressure in your tires, remove wieght off the nose of the car (washer fluid, sway bar, bumper support, etc.) for better weight transfer, get stickier tires, and on and on.

I'm not saying that under no circumstances would adding a 100lb. bag of sand to the trunk of the car make you run a hair faster. If your 60 ft is costing you time then figure out a way to lower it. Adding weight so you can hook better is a band-aid for broken leg.

If you are having traction problems, then I would run a full tank of gas or the amount it takes to get maximum traction with your present setup. You can run some fast times on a full tank of gas--I have done it and you can to. Until you tweak your suspension--this technique will work. Offset the weight with other weight removal such as front seat or anything else up front. Good luck.

the difference between 1 gallon in the car and 15 gallons should be a mph.

also the less gas you run in your tanks the greater than chance of sucking up trash that may be in there just some food for thought

but i know alot of guys that wont run unless there low gas lights on

I run with the absolute minimum possible (that is, when I'm not class-racing with a set minimum race weight).

More weight over the rear does help with traction, but it is also more mass to get moving - trade-off, IMHO. If you're racing on street radials, then the trade-off *might* be worth it, but on sticky tires, I wouldn't even consider it an option.

Additionally, more weight means better chance of breaking. Gas weighs 6.2 lbs/gal...not a lot, but I'd rather go down the track with 2 gallons less and run an 11.9 rather than than a 12.0.

Since I drive my car to the track and the closest track is 45 minutes away, AND I have to get back home afterward, I usually start from home with 3/4 tank at minimum. As I race, the gas goes down, I get a little faster all day long. So I usually race with anywhere from 2/3 of a tank to 1/4.

I ran my best ever 60' with the gauge on "E" (1.57). Get rid of all the weight you can and find another way to get traction.
