Default Can I run just mesh screens for filters on turbos??

Long story short... I'm thinking of just putting screens over my turbos, because there is no room to make inlets with these new turbos. And I dont drive in rain, down dirt roads, rocky roads, pretty much from work, dates, and racing. And I was thinking of making splash sheilds, so if I run in a puddle of water it wont splash and go in the turbos. Yeah.. let me know

Thanks Jordan

is your car a quartermile car only? Are you nuts? Do you know what the dust in the air will do to your engine, turbos etc. Man you are inhaling atmosphere like a giant hoover with those snails. Much worse than even NA and even Na guy wouldn't think of running no aircleaner or just a screen.
Are you sure you can't fit air clearners on their mabye direct to the turbos? There are lots of kinds of air cleaners. Mushroom types ,etc.

I am thinking to just get Louis 60 pounders if the are pretty much plug and play.

Yep, SAE did a study on debris in the air and found it was the dust-level stuff that caused the most engine wear. I could see it if it were 95% track, but to work and dates? Do it right, figure out how to get some filtered air to that or it is a damn poor design.

filtered air > mesh screen

in terms if performance and filtration

putting a screen inlet is a lot of restriction for the turbo and you actually LOSE Power

If you have the room, get some large diameter piping and you should be able to relocate the filters.

Pics?

I would not run screens only in any case but especially where those turbos are located.

You should be able to just put air cleaner directly on the turbos. They have lot of different types out there. Start searching. For sure run don't run open or just screens.Or those new turbos won't last long and either will your engine!

What about some of that foamy filtering material that you find wrapped around off-road and ATV filters? You could wrap it over the inlet and hose clamp it down...maybe hit it with some K&N oil to boost the filtration properties. Dunno if it would be sufficient on it own, but it's bound to be better than a screen.

I've heard of high powered set-ups losing nearly 100 hp due to restriction on here IIRC...

Open up your average cone filter, and flatten out all the folds... Lots of area.

The metal mesh screen reduces the area of intake on the turbo quite a bit instead!

You need a supporting cage to hold the foam or it will get ingested... If you can fit a cage in there you can fit a tight bend out to some filters. Those foam filters work off massive surface area too, a little sheet would either be restrictive or ineffective or both.

Put a paper coffee filter over it with some rubberbands and call it a day.
