Mess up my motor today!! Turbo ls1.
So today sucked. Went to the track it was about 85-90 out. I was getting about 170 iats but no knock so i pushed it and was given a fun surprise at the end of my 3rd pass.
Car was running really rough when I let off and there was oil and coolant everywhere. Oil came from my pass side valve cover gasket that was pushed out and coolant from the over flow cap that came out.
I pulled plugs and 3 were melted badly,2 soaked in oil. At this point I think i burnt a few valves and maybe blew a head gasket? I put new plugs in and valve cover gasket just to get it home. No wierd engine noises but it blows out alot of smoke and is misfiring pretty bad.
This was 15.5psi, 170 iats, hp tuner logged no knock which is wierd,215 engine temp.
What do you guys think,I havent taken it apart yet.

Wow that is not what i want to hear at all. The afr was at 11.3,no knock. Im running forged pistons so i would think a stock valve would melt first, right?
Not sure on the iats,it was really hot out. Im running a huge 4inch IC.

I just got the turbo back from turbonetics for a rebuild.
And it wasn't burning any oil out the exhaust before.
Just wanted to add the I was able to drive 100 miles home.
And there are no weird engine noise.
Why would you not assum that a stock intake valve burnt or bent from heat?
Forged pistons.hell fire rings.it has aftermarket high heat exhaust valve.
The only thing in there stock are the intake valves

Broke or cracked ringlands will not produce any engine noise, Pull the breather cap off your valve cover, see if it is puffing smoke in sinc with a compression stroke, if so your rings and or ringlands went south. I broke a few back in the day, idled bad but still ran and of course smoked quite a bit..

Like when I had to stop for tolls (the days before the fast lanes), I would overheat and have to pull over and add more coolant. Sounds like you might have blown a head gasket. As for the ringland comments, hard to say.

Well got the heads off. Cyl 7 ringland is missing a chunk so you guys are right and I hate you for it.
The valves all look good, how does a forged piston break before a stock valve does?
So right now im thinking about my next step.Do i just buy another forged 347 shortblock or do i send this one out to get resleaved and either all new pistons or just the one?
Not sure yet i guess ill have to start getting prices tomorrow.
Id like to go bigger cubes at this point but as we all know its not just slapping a 402 in there and calling it a day. 241s arnt going to cut it,3inch dp not going to work,tc78 to small,4l65 with 200 more hp not going to happen.
Ive read all about the whole if you want to play you pay, now i believe it.

Ran it lean or had a problem.
I'd just fix what you have if you can. There's always a tendency to change stuff, but honestly what are you shooting for, a 9.9 pump gas car? Maybe your tune was a lil aggressive too.

Your right on John. My goal with this car is a pump gas car (i might get meth after this happened) that can run a 9.99. The car is about 3800lbs but i think it can be done.
Either way i have to take the motor out so im going to send the trans in and get a t-brake installed and Ill buy a meth kit. So hopfully that will get me to my goal even with a little 347.

In order to break a ringland and blow a head gasket you had detonation. DO NOT just replace hard parts and beat on it again without checking your tune. The result will be the same. If your exhaust is too loud to hear knock, and you KR sensors aren't working, just do an 1/8 mile pull, then read the spark plugs. This should show minor problems that could be devastating over a 1/4.

I totally agree. Ive learned my leason. 175 plus iats is no where you want to be running down the track at 15.5psi. It was my fault. It didnt help that the tune was not set up to pull all the timing out about about 150 iat.
These are probe forged pistons. What do you guys recomend next?

Yes it can and very easily also, Though I never got my 9.99 or even a 10 sec slip I had the mph to do so @ 138, This was with an 383 LT1 supercharged. My pass was with a slipping clutch, Nitro Dave's LS1 went 10.1 or 10.3 I dont remember with a heads and cam setup with only a 200 shot. So ya you can do it!!
