Arrow Any Ideas?

Car has been running good up until last week when i went to leave for work!

Went to fire up the car last week and heard a knocking/tapping sound, looked @ the oil pressure and seen it was only @ 20-25psi, after about 5sec's the knocking went away and up went the oil pressure (60psi).....

Since that night the noise has not returned, i decided i wanted to make some big changes on my setup and tore down the motor, pulled the heads and found this!

It catches a nail pretty easily and im worried if i put it back together like this it might cause some more issues, if anybody has an idea please feel free to chime in!

Thanks!

5.3's are nutorious for piston slap. Could be something related to that but thats usually a reoccuring thing during start-up.

If it only did it once then fixed itself its hard to diagnose. picture is hard to see really if it would make a differance...

Probably piston slap.
Also, mine does this when cold, than it warms up and it goes away, probably the lifters have to pump up with oil again.

I was "told" the motor only had 42k on it, the pistons are decently clean with not much carbon buildup at all, but this just has me worried a little bit.....

Was this a junkyard motor? Looks like it spent some time with water in the cylinder. I've seen that before. A ball hone should take care of the cylinder wall, + new rings.

The motor did sit for a while on a pallet in the PO's garage, if thats the case i guess i'll just yank this motor out find another 5.3 and build this one on the side!
