2000 Firehawk... turbo with t56 or th400?
Hey guys, Im finally starting my build on the Hawk now that ive got a nice house with a huge garage to play in. As of now the car still has the stock 10 bolt rear end, stock ls1 with 102k miles with a t56 that is scratchy going into 2nd gear. Needless to say ive got a lot of work to do.
Im dead set on going turbo at this point, Ive had over 500HP n/a with my last trans am and I think a turbo would be so much more fun. To all of you guys out there with forced induction with a t56, how are you enjoying it?
I really dont want to go all out and wind up with a race car.. that's not what Im after here. I still want to be able to drive this thing 1000+ miles across country to visit family. I have a TH400 in my shed, but I dont think I could go without overdrive. Alot of people have been telling me that a TH400 would be much better with a turbo, but Im here to get opinions on this. Thanks guys!

If mainly for street I would say T56. But if its a strip car, I would go TH400 for consistency reasons. I ditched my T56 for the consistency aspect of things and went with TH400 because I see so many driver errors from guys with a T56 at the track. If you a "Roll Racer" then I would most def stay T56. I dont know everything but this my opinion.

not interested in winning every race n just havvin fun.. as usual a t56.. if you wanna win more and have the besstt performing 500hp, a th400 will do that for you.. Its mainly easier to load a turbo with an auto which helps make it more fun as well. When it comes down to eliminiting drag strip ****, just pick what you enjoy more..

Helped me change my mind when I was starting my build was: cost of a built T56 vs TH400. HUGE difference in cost plus a 400 was going to be far more consistant at everything which meant faster. The T56 was fun, but too expensive IMO. Good luck

Im still pondering using the TH400 I have... I build transmissions when Im not at work. Im still going to be on the lookout for a 4l80E. Does anyone know what the lowest set of gears you can get for the 12 bolt are?

Way lower than you want to go. I know 5.13's at least. Get you a t400 with a gear vendor's. I had one in my 69 Camaro and I have one in my f350. I don't tow with it our never used it at the strip. I just used if for overdrive. Very dependable that way and I have 4.10 gear and would turn 2000 at 70

I thought about a gear vendor. Oh and I was asking how low numerically can you go with the gears to keep the rpms down, (IE less than 3.23 gears), I know with a turbo you would want lowers gears to some extent
