Are there ANY reliable, unbroken, no excuse FI setups out there?
Just curious, not trying to step on anybody's toes. But I always find myself reading a TON of excuses about these setups not making power for xxx reason, or something that has broken, or the car is apart cause this didn't work, etc....Is there anybody out there that has been running a FI setup for a long period of time without any problems or excuses for it not running correctly?
And this EXCLUDES you Mathew Harlan

Re: Are there ANY reliable, unbroken, no excuse FI setups out there?
Not me I hope it will be this time. My first problem was my fault....not enough fuel...2nd time was my fault...installed a head gasket upside down...last time was head porters fault. Those are not excuses...just screw ups. Now I would ask how many people have made over 500rwhp and not had SOME kind of problems along the way.
I think a lot of us just got in over our heads. You make an extra 25-100rwhp and it doesnt take much in the way of tuning or planning to do that. Now you bolt on 200 more hp and then you find out you dont have the fuel...need to pull timing...stock head gaskets and bolts arent up to task etc.. Hopefully people willlearn from my mistakes

CABLEBANDIT, you said it best. bolt on 200+ hp and problems/breaks are inevitable. there are just too many precautions, weak links and premaintance issues that need to be addressed. so you bolt on 200+ hp and brace yourself for the problems as they arise. overall my FI setup was a success, up and running over a year, daily driven, but ive had setbacks. big power is not for the faint of heart LS1 owners

Define problems too.
I have had zero motor issues, a bad set of Comp 941 springs but that was more than 10K miles ago. I've had a bum slave cylinder(who hasn't), 2 bad scavenge pumps, but zero motor trouble or turbo trouble.
I've blown the ring on 2-3 gear in the tranny...thats about it, had alot of downtime due to one thing or another, but none of it relating to the turbo or the motor, but almost ALL of it a result of incompetence during the install/not ordering/installing the right parts.
Other than that everytime I pushed on the gas it went and went hard.
My downtime could have been ALOT less had I worked on the car myself too, or if the shop that had the car had worked in it too

I put the blower on at around 66,000 and it has 80,000 on it now.
Problems? Any car I ever raced that had NO FI had problems. Guess that's the nature of the game.

Re: Are there ANY reliable, unbroken, no excuse FI setups out there?
Well,
I have had 0 problems with the car for the last 2000 miles (this is as long as the turbos have been back on).
I had a turbo eat itself after 600 miles the first time the car was together
I would have more miles on my combo, but I work away from home during the week and I only drive the car on the weekends.

Re: Are there ANY reliable, unbroken, no excuse FI setups out there?
From what I have seen, most of the engines that break have stock pistons and compression. Still some people have gotten away with using stock pistons.
I wouldnt bother building a FI car with out changing the pistons. Too risky.

It has now been 5 yrs for the LS1 in the f-body, I was just curious to see if there was actually a FI setup working well. Since the market for FI is so vague and scarce for the LS1, people should make sure they have all their stuff in line and have the tuning knowledge before they go spend 10+ grand on a turbo setup and then wonder why it doesn't run right. Sorry if I come off harsh, I just call 'em how I see 'em

Re: Are there ANY reliable, unbroken, no excuse FI setups out there?
Honestly my take on this whole thing is the power adder is usually fine. (I have kept my long block together for 3 years now) The tuning is the major thing. If you can get the car tuned, which with a turbo I honestly feel can not be done well with a stock computer. Not saying it has not but I just think 99% of the people out there will not keep the cars together if they are not tuned with a computer system that can handle the load. Tuning will make your car live if you have all the components to support the hp. (durable fuel pump, etc..)Most race products are just not built to last years of constant abuse.
Just my opinion on this though

zturbo, so what you are saying is the stock computer can't handle a basic 4 or 5 psi setup like the turbotech single t76 at 4.5 psi?

Re: Are there ANY reliable, unbroken, no excuse FI setups out there?
It better be able to handle a lot because I'm about to throw a lot at it.

Re: Are there ANY reliable, unbroken, no excuse FI setups out there?
Of course, I realize that I don't qualify, as I'm only waiting for the Raymer kit, but I've blown the 3rd gear inserts in that "less-than-well-designed" T-56, while only producing 114MPH traps in a 3600lb SS. Yes, part of that is my horrible driving, part is the famous restrictor in the hydraulic clutch line, but the point is: Problems happen when we try to race!
Live with it. Fix the short comings after the power adder. Or... Put in Baer brakes, twin disk clutch, 11-wide wheels with 315 tires, Z06 spec trans, a twelve-bolt rear, and fully forged engine before you do the power adder! It only makes sense!
But people like me (and all those above) prefer to get the power first and fix the weakest link.
It's how we live when we don't have $1B annual income.
So... What'll it be?

Re: Are there ANY reliable, unbroken, no excuse FI setups out there?
When going with FI we need to compare it to the engine that got it started, the 5.0
They came with forged pistons from the factory and swapping the heads could bring down the compression to 8 to 1. A perfect start for adding a blower. Since the stock heads didnt flow well they were being replaced anyway. Doesnt get much easier than that. The stock cams actually work well with good heads and 172 rockers.
Lets not forget the location of the throttle body of the 5 liter. Air has a nice smooth path from the air filter, blower and into the throttle body. Look at the restrictive twists and turns required to run a vortech on a ls1 or lt1. There is a bottleneck where the air enters the throttle body. That has to cost some horsepower. The procharger design is less restrictive.
A better way to do it would be to have the supercharger draw cold air from the cowl with a tall cowl induction hood. Then have the blower discharge the air paralell with the fire wall and then have it turn towards the front and run through an intercooler mounted in front of the radiator and then have the air go up and into the throttle body.
With this set up along with a single pattern cam with around 222 duration and 9 to 1 compression the engine should make an easy 600rwhp. It would be nice and clean, reliable and powerfull.
Going FI on a stock engine is an uphill battle. Look at it this way, if you were to build an engine for FI and pump gas you would not run 10 to 1 cast pistons. Also you would try to make the intake air path as smooth as possible without sharp twist and turns.
