Help me decide, Turbo ???
I was planning on using OFI hot part for my turbo project and have a local performance shop custom make the charge piping for me. I asked for a quote on a PTE76GTS turbo that the OFI kit comes with. They told me they cant get a better price on a Garrett Turbo and that the GT4202 would be the closest match, just a little smaller (74mm vs 76mm). I am open to the idea of using the turbo but I figured I would ask here first if that would be good for my setup. I also read that a TC76 is what many on here prefer for stock cube motor. Pros and cons of any or all would be nice.
I plan to do a 10:1 stock displacement engine with either a ZO6 cam or TR CheaTR cam. Stock heads, LS6 Intake. The turbine housing on 4202 has a 1.15 A/R but a 1.01 is optional. I would like it to spool up around 3-3500 rpm, a little lag wouldnt be a bad thing. I want it to be very streetable and drive close to stock until the boost come on. Goal of 500+hp on 6psi, After that I know it will be capable of much more power than I can handle.
Thanks in advance for any help/advice, Joe

cant get a better price than what? IF you want to make 500WHP the TC76 can do that with ease.
PS, I took a little road trip to OFI over the weekend, his work looks awesome, you wont be dissapointed with those headers.

The 76GTS and GT4202 are about the same price but my shop says they can get the 4202 for a better price because they buy at least one garrett turbo a week. They dont really purchase precision turbos. I will have to inquire about the TC76. From what I read its a cheaper, a smaller packaged turbo and spools a little better than even the 76GTS. Most people on this forum have a 76GTS or a TC76, but the Garrett GT line of turbos is still rather new.

Well you can get a new TC76 with the turbine wheel for 1080 bucks that is a great price for a great turbo with a one year no questions asked warranty. It spools super fast and will make tons of power on stock cubes up to about 850 rwhp. I am at 700 on only 10 lbs boost. I vote TC76 because of the compactness, price, and warranty. Good luck.

Thanks for the input
I plan to run the OFI hotside parts ($2500 for stainless) and then the turbo (about $1k) and thats before the BV, WG, IC, custom charge pipe, fuel pump and injectors. and I also want to do a cam and forged pistons. The total price for the turbo kit alone is probably gonna cost 6k alone. I hope to piece it together over the next year.

I think I narrowed it down to the 02+ ZO6 cam and 10:1 CR with stock heads. Im pretty sure I can get 500+whp on this cam with 5-6psi and then hopefully 600+ with 10psi. Im still in the planning stage of this project but hopefully I will start the supporting mods soon with the cam and intake for the summer

Ya that sounds good, IMO I don't think that aftermarket heads offset the gain in comparison to hp to reliabilty, as in lower CR. Especially if shooting for low boost and 500rwhp or so. Getting up to 10psi is getting in the zone of risking the engine even if all things are good. I'd personally shoot for about 550rwhp max with that combo and run that Z06 cam, which should be about 8psi or so.

I have a PTE GT42-76 With 1.12 A/R
Car hasn't run yet, but should get tunned end of this month, beginning of next so i can let you know how it goes. Im t4 flanged, with a custom truck manifold kit im making myself.
I spent the extra money and got the PTE turbo. Not knocking any other turbo companies, but PTE makes bad *** turbos. Lots of very fast cars swear by them, as well as alot of shops.

I might have to go with the Precision 76GTS... its between that and the Turbonetics TC76.
I will have stock compression but dont plan on keeping the stock pistons. Forged pistons will be in place cause I rather not scatter number 7 around my crankcase. I will also be using ARP head studs, main studs and rod bolts. the weakest link should be the rods but I dont plan to spin this thing to 7k which is why Im also going to stick with the ZO6 cam.
