Default Fastest (or most powerful) 317 head car?

I know kyle was up there with his old 370 setup, just wondering what kind of numbers people can see out of these things without pushing an asston of water? Kicking around some ideas with some buddies and would like to know what limits people have run into.

Stockish to ****-tons of work, doesn't really matter, would like a few details on the setup though.

yes, on the small motor (346)

I think those heads went through 3 different "porters" by the time i got rid of them.

They were never that great to start with, i don't think they were ever over 300 on the intake

Nice, that gives me a little bit of hope that the 317s I'm using in my set-up might hold and not push any water.

Wow. would like to hear more about what it took to keep that thing sealed up. People are telling me my puny ls1 is gonna start to warp and push water in short time if I ever wanted to push 800-1000whp

setup is old and long gone. Search and you will find what you seek, it's been hashed out many times already.

What are the limiting factors when using a 317 head? Obviously they won't flow as much as an after market head so the power potential is a little lower but looking at harlans set-up, you can still make a lot. What else though, my main concern is strength, the heads with the thicker deck are much stronger. By running a 317 head into the 1000rwhp range will I be risking my new block and everything else or is it just a matter of not making as much power? I don't want the heads to have a massive failure and take everything with them, is that even possible?

With a stock head there could be a few factors that limit power or reliable power for that matter. Using a stock valve over 1200hp is not a good idea. It would be time to look into changing the valves and also after that you will start moving coolant with them too. I am sure Harlen at least had stainless valves and most turbo guys with big hp employ the use iconel valves on the exhaust side.

Mines a blower so it may be a little different than the turbo guys but I'm sure valves are still a good idea.
