I know the pre 2004 5.3l were return style. Then after they offered flexfuel they went to a returnless style.
I could be wrong, but I believe if you live in an area that doesn't see alot of heat running a returnless setup should be fine.
If your car has the lines ran and you have a choice. do the return style to avoid fuel vapor lock from the heat soak.
If heat isn't a factor where you are. Just block off the return on your tank and run returnless.

I have a returnless fuel rail on my intake. I flipped it around so the inlet was facing forward. This will keep the regulator off the firewall and tech legal. Then I just used a boost referenced return style regulator. Hope this helps.
The inlet is on the right as you're looking at it and the return goes out the bottom.
