Just finished Summit Brand gear swap
I bent the pinion on my stock 3.42, so I rebuild the entire rear end using my summit book. Axle bearings actually came from GM, oops. Well, after breaking in the rear, here's my feedback so far.
All parts were cheap as hell to buy and looked great.
Fitment was top notch.
After adjusting backlash 3 times I finally found a semi-quiet zone.
The only whine I get is on hard deceleration, like 1st gear over 25.......
Quiet whine at that.
I will keep you guys updated on 5k 10k marks.
Anyone that wants to know seat of pants dyno LOVES the 3.73. I heard rumor that summit brand gears are Richmonds, dunno what truths are behind that......
Anyone that has stock 3.42's are losing out! City driving is awesome, especially considering I have a 15lb flywheel...
Highway driving is sweet as well. Never knew 6th gear could scoot like that!
Also gas mileage went up, since there are so many hills here in New England. Used to avg. 25mpg. I'm at 28mpg per fillup combined (27.8 actually.)
And for reference to anyone that snaps a lug stud like I did, they can be swapped out with the axle on the car.... It's tight, but doable.
