Default Rear Noise

I have a grinding noise that only occurs when the car is in Nuetral or is coasting. It doesn't do it when its in drive or your on the throttle. But, even if u just slip it in nuetral at above 30mph it will make a horrible grinding/whining noise. As soon as u get it back in gear though, it stops. Anybody have any ideas as to what this may be? Also the gears don't whine too badly at all when the car is moving forward. Is my rear going out?

Depending on the wear pattern your gears may quiet down when on the throttle, other rears howl on the decel. Also look at the transmission, I assuming a Manual trans, could be a pilot bearing.

What was added or changed lately? Any problems before this? Any prior work done?

Sounds like the time my 7.625 ate the pinion bearings. Ultimately left me stranded and waiting for AAA to send a flatbed wrecker. I'm lucky I was staying off the interstate.

It had 2:73's and i jumped to 4:10's and my differential's pin was broken, so i put in an Auburn Diff. and the Richmond 4:10's.Then, like 3 months after install My pinion bearing stripped loose and my gears got slightly chewed up by grinding into the Differential, and I had to get them hand grinded around the edges of the gears. I then had an experienced mechanic setup the whole rear correctly and about 2 months later I managed to screw up my housing (can't remember, stripped out main caps maybe?) So I've now had the whole setup, (Auburn Diff, 4:10's and housing from a 91 TA) for about 2months and I've only noticed this noise when coasting or nuetral for about 1 month.
