Are gears worth it for me?
Hi,
I hope you can advise me.
Please check my sig for my intended mods.
I really don't want to kill my stock (A4) tranny and 10 bolt.
I am not really into drag racing, I am more into roll racing, and I would like to get from 30 mph to 90 mph quicker.
I have an A4 WS6 (So I think I have 3.23:1 gears).
Are my gears worth swapping for my aims, and if so, which ones should I get?
Would swapping gears put my trans or rear end at risk?
Thanks for the help......

I believe 3.42's or 3.73's are your only options.
I would hate to go to all the trouble of swapping the gears only going from a 3.23 to a 3.42. I just finished puttin 4.10's in my M6 today and what a WORLD of difference. It gets up the RPM band quick now.
I would say get the 3.73's and make sure you get a install kit with all new seals and bearings. Saves a lot of trouble and the peace of mind that everything is getting replaced with new parts.
If everything is set up correctly, there should not be any more stress on the rear end. It's more so the intial torque hit that weakens the rear end. Like dumping the clutch on your H/C M6 from 5,000RPM. THAT will put some stress on the rear end.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
Sounds very interesting.
Can anyone with an A4 who's done the 3.73's swap, confirm it would be the kind of upgrade I'm looking for ??
Thanks for the help.......

I've looked into swapping the TC, but the advise I keep getting is it will probably takeout my tranny. And I really don't want spend that much money just on rebuilding my tranny.
If I could do a stall and it not kill my tranny I would be more tempted, but I don't want to spend too much on my car, and I would like it a little faster than stock.(I could easy spend $20k on H/C, TC, SC, DP N2O, rear, tranny etc etc....)
My planned mods are within my budget
Question is, will 3.73's make me a little faster in the 30-90 mph range?

Nope, you'll still be going between 30 and 90 mph
That's what I wanted to hear, thanks for the advise.

A stall is a hell of a lot better option for you since you already have 3.23s. Going from 3.23s to 3.73s is not that big of a deal, on the other hand a Yank 3600-4000 stall is night and day difference. A stall to me is even better then a cam in an auto. Get a cooler and watch tranny temps and everything will live a long and happy life.

If I could do a stall and garantee it will not kill my tranny I would be getting a TC instead of RR, pulley and gears.
No problem Pseudonym, I am thankfull you guys are helping me decide.
I know 4.10's are a bad idea for an A4, are 3.90 gears okay for my A4, to make them more worth swapping? And would they be better for me than the 3.73s??

Get the 3.73s!
I went from 3.42's to 4.10s in my 6 speed and WOW...HUGE difference.
So going from 3.23s to 3.73's would be pretty damn similar to what I did.
Dont worry about the 10 bolt. I got over 50 passes on my stock 10 bolt with NO issues.
You just got to know how to baby it out of the hole.
Plus you stated that your more into roll racing anyways........I wouldnt worry about the rear.

Is your tranny stock, and is yours an exception, or is the general rule that the stock tranny can handel a stall?
I am under the impression that a TC will generally break the crap 4l60 tranny.

yes my trans is stock and lots of people on this site run stalls on factory 4l60s with no problems.
It's not the cost of a stall that is putting me off somewhat, it's more the additional cost if it takes out my tranny that I worriey about.
I hear our stock tranny can take gears without a problem, hence why I'm considering gears instead of a stall......Although if I see enough evidence to say our 4l60 can cope with a TC, I may be tempted outherwise.........
