Is there anyway to check the back lash of the ring and pinion other then taking out the axles and discounnecting the drive shaft? I need to take the cover off to change out the gear oil from the break in of the 3:73 gear installation, while i had the cover off i was wondering if anyone had a trick to checking the backlash? It seems like the drive shaft has way to much play in it...i have a solid sleve with the correct pre-load. It didn't have this much slack pre changing from 3:23's to the 3:73's. It never made a clunking noise before...now it does it sometimes.

I dont see why you couldnt check it while everything is still attached. It just that it is such a precise measurement, that having the DS, axles, wheels, etc still on is gonna make it harder to get a reading correctly. If you are going to pull the cover anyway, then yes, try and check it, wouldnt hurt.

pre load is good.. make sure your nut did not back off, cant tell you how many times i have seen this happen. use the red loc tite. I generally use the pattern to tell the story, if you remove the drive shaft install a socket bit into a screw gun, put your hand on the ring for some resistance and spin away. the pattern will tell you everything you want to know. If you leave the axles in you should have plenty of resistance to see.
