Default BEWARE to those with 4.10's/10-bolt!

my '00 ws6 m6 is a mild bolt on car with bfg kwds tires. in 11/02 i had a local shop install superior 4.10's. i felt comfortable with them, they said they do about 3 gear installs a week, and i know they've been in business for 20 odd years. i provided a new install kit and synthetic oil. i gently broke the gears in for 500 miles. i put about 11k miles on them. car never went to the track, no clutch dumps, etc. rear has always been quiet.
today, i go to install a TA cover/stud kit. when i pulled the cover off, the fluid was really dark, and there was a LOT of sludge around the magnet. inspecting the the ring gear, i found 4 of the teeth had small portions sheared off. the pinion looked o.k. i couldn't find the pieces in the diff or oil. how long do you think i can make this last, until i can put my old 3:42's back in? or maybe it's time to get a 9".

Do yourself a favor and dump the stocker. If you are going to put time/money into anything, make sure it's for a more permanent solution.

That's just my rationale behind it. I got a Strange 12 Bolt on order...

I abuse mine pretty hard i.e. on street tires when it blows it blows and I'll get a 12 bolt.

the most abuse mine ever saw was coming out of the smart tag lane on the expressway (automatic toll payment). last month i remember slowing down to about 30, dropping it into 3rd and taking it up to about 100. i spun and spun, then hooked, and heard a little "pop". i guess that's when it happened. i hope i can limp it along until i can get the stock gears back in. i don't have the $ for a 12-bolt/9".

i've always been against 4.10's in a 10bolt. i have a moser12 w/4.11's. i've done many 6,000rpm dumps with no problems.

4.10's and the stock 10bolt will last.....it's all depends on your driving style! I have 50+runs down the 1/4. If you drive it like you stole it you can break "just" about anything. If you don't know how to drive don't get 4.10's......If you need alot of practice and can't wait then get a 12 bolt or 9inch while you learn how to drive.

I've had GM 4.10s installed 5 months ago in my stock 10 bolt and I have had very good luck with them. I'm running regular 275/40/17 street tires. The rear makes no noise at all. I broke mine in for 500 miles, then had the fluid changed. No probs yet, and tons of fun!
Chuck from Sleepy Hollow Transmissions in NY installed them and he did a great job!

10 days later and the gears are holding up. my new install kit from thunder (FAST!) arrived today, i'll be putting my 3.42's back in shortly. honestly, i had gotten a little sick of the 4.10's anyway. 6th gear won't be the same w/o them though.

don't get me wrong, i'll miss certain aspects of the 4.10's, but the constant drone (i have the loudmouth) extra shifting, etc. was getting a little old. i'd like to try 3.73's in the future.

I can understand the loudmouth drone from hell... I was SOOOOOOOO happy when I got rid of it. That said, maybe consider getting a different cat-back. It makes it much more fun to drive when your ears are not ringing all the time from a short drive!

I don't think you will see/feel much difference with 3.73s but to each his own. BTW, I shift LESS with my 4.10s because I can pass people with no prob in 6 gear now, and I pull real hard in 5th. Maybe you needed to shift more due to the old "avoid the drone rpm range" game?

In summary, new cat-back + 4.10s = lots of fun!

i got mine to last plenty of runs before they broke. ofcoarse i was always thinking of them when i launched the car at the track. i was very easy on them and i only got 2.00 60s. anyways they ended up breaking anyways hehe. i just put some 3.73s in it and they had held up pretty good so far.

I have a 10 Bolt w/ 4.10's. No problems here. But I don't kill it at the track. I need to first save up for a 12 Bolt.

Mean Machine you said you dropped it in third and took it up to 100. Did you shift to 4th? I have 4.10s in my car and I can only do about 80-82 in third. Does this sound right? I hope those aren't 4.56s in mine. What does everyone top out in 3rd+4th. I have the speedo corrector but not sure if its working. Can someone help.

I have had 3.73's and I redlined at about 80mph at about 6000 rpm's in third gear.

it very well may not have been 100mph, i was keeping my eyes on the road for other cars. i was in 4th when i let off at 100 though. sorry if i caused any confusion. fyi, i used the hpp3 to correct my speedo.

I just got my Motive 4.10's installed yesterday, and i love them. Even though I havn't had a chance to open up the throttle, I can tell it will be awesome. They do whine a bit but they should quiet down once they're broken in. Doug at East Coast Supercharging said that if I blow the rearend some time soon because of the gears, then he would rebuild me another rear. If it happens 2-3 years from now then it's another story, but I'm good to go for now.

i'm starting to think that the gears broke because of a poor install, but i really don't have any recourse against the shop. when i put the TA cover on i noticed that one of the brake line bolts was way loose. not a good sign. i figure i'll get blamed one way or the other. live and learn.
