Stock to 4:10's?
Ok heres my problem. I have my HP about were I want my DD to be (mid 400"s)M6
I have the stock rear end and gears. Love the MPH. I don't have the money for a 9" or a 12 bolt right now with kids in college. Wondering if I should go ahead and put the 4:10's in? I know the 10 bolt is the weak link and if I beat it up it will break. So if I'm easy on it and don't dump it can I get by with the 4:10 and 10bolt?
God I hate to wait 2-5 years on a rear end and gears but college has a hole in my money bucket!
So can I get the 4:10 now and hope the rear holds for a while? The stockers suck so bad!

with the small 4.10s',if you don't abuse them, they'll be ok.
a hard launch, abusive shift,or wheel hop will break them.
the OEM 3.42s' are much stronger than the 4.10s' would be,so keep the 3.42s' for now.
it's better to have a running car with 3.42s' than a broken car with 4.10s'.

I installed 4.10s in my car a few months ago..... I LOVE IT!
I find myself not dumping the clutch as hard as before.
If you take it easy you should be fine. As for mph, don't worry about that. With an M6 you've got plenty of gears to handle the 4.10s.
my car isn't my DD by the way.

I have 4.10s and daily drive it and love them! I have replaced them once but in my opinion it still beats waiting for me to save up for a 9" due to my college income it would take a couple years. I would go with the 4.10s and just take it easy. You wont regret it.

i have a 403whp car with 410s and an m6. had my rear go out BEFORE the cam, so went ahead and rebuilt the 10 bolt, and put GM 410s in it. love it so far, and i shift hard. if it breaks **** it, ill drop a 9 in it, or just rebuild the 10 bolt again. its way worth it thats for sure, shifting is what a m6 is made for so 410s compliment it perfectly. 80 @ 2100 rpms is NOT bad at all

My 4.10s have survived, just not the carrier. But in all fairness, it broke after wheel hoping at the track, but i still drove it home 20 something miles. You'll be ok if you don't abuse it too bad. You can make the 10 bolt somewhat stronger if you don't mind spending a few extra hundred bucks; not saying it's the best option, but it's an option nontheless. Stronger axles, carrier, ta girdle, solid pinion spacer, welding axle tubes, strong gear set... this is all relatively cheap and will help with longevity

I think some lower control arm relocation brackets and beefier LCA's will help rid some of the wheelhop you will get if you haven't replaced them already. Wheelhop can be murder on your gearset and if you can eliminate it completely, your 10 bolt will last a bit longer.
If you look into the price of gears, a rearend rebuild kit, and labor to install and rebuild (if you can't do it yourself) the price will get up there. Rebuilding a 10 bolt is not cheap and will require specia ltools, some hours, and a competent mechanic. A recent issue of GMHTP just went through this.
You can get an S60 with backing plates, your choice of gear, without ABS, with a driveshaft, install it yourself, and have alot of confidence for just a little over 3k shipped to a residence.
That's what I did, I looked into both. However my car is not a DD and sees a bit of drag.

i put 4.10's in my car really woke it up but its days were numbered.
mine lasted a few passes and a summer of hard driving untill last wed it wheel hopped i think and broke the gear. (haven't pulled it apart yet)
now i need to look into some lca's. if ur goin to do it i think motive gears are stronger.

I have made my stock rear-end last for 215K miles. Right now I have a bad wheel bearing so I ordered the GM 4.10 (or 4.11?) gears from JawGears and a Ratech "Deluxe" rear-end kit (includes new wheel bearings). I'm looking forward to installing them, but that torsen "paddle" thing worries me.
Anyway I figure I made it last this long and I don't do things that shock the rear-end so not too worried about breaking it. I think if you're sensible about it, you should be ok.

After some road racing this weekend, I could definitly use more gear then the 3.42 out of the corners. I could pull a guy slightly down the straights, but would lose him out of the corners, and had to stay in 2nd a good part of the race, where it almost could have gone to 1st if I wanted to really downshift. It's an m6 with about 405rwhp and we don't plan on drag racing, but DD and more road racing.
Does anyone make a quiet, strong 3.90 set of gears for this baby 7.5 rear end?
