Default Swapping Rear End Question

If I got a 10 bolt from a 6-speed car with 3.42's and swapped it for my 2.73 rear end, what all would I have to do after bolting it up? Anything that would make it complicated? I know I would have to get the speedo recalibrated, but I am getting that taken care of with edit anyway. I originally wanted to do 3.73's, but that would cost a LOT more.

Thanks for any help.

hey berman, you shouldnt have to do much more than cal. the speedo, as long as the rear end you are swapping is from a compatible year car. there isnt any difference in the rear axle housing whether its from an automatic car or a 6 speed. now, if youre taking the 3.42 10 bolt out of a way earlier model vehicle, you will have to do some pretty extensive welding/ fabrication. ive taken a 12 bolt leaf spring set up, "like for a 68 or so camaro" and put it in a gen 4 car twice. you have to cut all the spring perches and brackets off of the new 10 bolt, and weld them on in the correct locations on the older 12 bolt. (the same would go for an older 10 bolt). the geometry and layout is no where near the same in an older car compared to your 98z. it is not easy in any manner and requires PRECISE grinding/welding/location of the 10 bolt hardware to the 12 bolt. proffesional assistance is recommended if this is your case, or you will end up with a big freakin nightmare.

Its from a 99 SS, so I dont think I will have to worry about any of that.

Thanks for the info though.

Another problem I am worried about is that I have traction control, and this rear end doesnt.

Then you will have to use your axles and backing plates from your old rear, non TCS has the sensor in the middle and TCS cars have the sensors on each wheel..

So everything from my 2.73 rear end is interchangable with the 3.42 rear end?

Everything should interchange, you will have to leave the sensor in the center of the abs rear to plug the hole and thats about it..

yes you can just swap and use your backing plates and what not or you can just tuck your wires away and not have tcs anymore.

I am putting a 12-bolt 4.10 in my M6 and taking the stock 3.42rear and puttung in friends 2.73 A4 02 z28. He wants to upgrade gears for low cost and i want to get rid of the rear, works out great for both parties!!!

You cannot 'turn off' the TCS iwith edit, you will get two annoying yellow and two red lights on your dash if the wheel sensors are disconnected since the ABS will no longer work also.

I dont have my TCS or ABS anymore, just have to take the cluster apart and block off the LEDs, you just cant pull the bulbs, they are LEDs soldered to a PC board.

I think I am going to try to find one with TCS so I can keep my ABS.

If I got the non TCS rear and swapped my axles and backing plates into it, would it now have TCS/ABS?
