Default Gear swap?

I have a 2001 SOM Z28 A4 with 22K miles on it and it has the 2.73 gears. The mods I have are: BMR SFC, Magnaflow catback, direct flo lid, and holley powershot filter. For my next mod I am leaning towards changing the gears. The car is a daily driver and I have pretty much decided to go with 3.42 gears. My question is,

Is it OK to change the gears alone, or do I need to get a torque converter at the same time?

I figure for GM gears and install kit it will cost roughly $400, plus install. But if I want a TC it gets significantly more expensive and will require more time to save up.

I know that a TC will help, but will I see a noticeable improvement with gears alone? If so then I can always add the TC at a later date.

thanks

Well IMO you'll see alot more with a T/C.
There are some pretty quick cars w/2.73's.
Then when the time comes for a gear go 3.73, it matches the A-4 set-up nicely.

I agree with TC first. I picked up over a second with my midwest stall since I have 2.73 gears.
