Question Stock 10 bolt weak point

What is the weak point in the stock 10 bolt that makes most people say it is inadequate for 4.10 gears in our cars? Are the spider gears the main problem?

Thanks,

Dave

I'd like also to know the answer to that one, seeing as I went through 4 sets of 4:10's in 7 months.

With the small-to-begin-with ring gear size
and the few ring gear teeth to share load,
on the little 7.625 10-bolt the gear just gets
kinda overstressed if something doesn't
either start spinning or quit pushing.

If you baby it you can make it last if the
General's ghost smiles upon you. One good
shock applied can shear teeth or at least
start the fracture to be completed over
time.

I don't think the Zexel chunk has spiders per se.
But these also are breakable, I believe the
metal-bind clamping scheme is still a clutch
when you get down to it, only one ill suited
for continuous high slip @ high pressure
power dissipation.

Exactly the "compact" design of this rear does not allow the enough material/mass to keep enough rigidity to support the power our cars make.
So the problem is magnified with a 4.10 & the pinion gets tiny & down to 9 teeth.

W/ a M-6 nothing can hold up add some D/R or E/T streets & watch it go boom.
M-6 cars are hard on the drivetrain, it is after all a direct link.
If you dont stab it out the hole constantly it'll prolly live.
