Default 8.5 in my 4th gen

My friend recently gave me his rear out of his 79 camaro and i did a little research and i looks like it will fit .... I was wondering if anyone knew anything about putting this in an f body?

Mostly want to know how to make a torque arm mount, spring mounts, Panarm bar mounts, and shock mounts

I know it seems like a lot but when youre getting a good rear for FREE!!! cant hurt to try and install it

I really need help on this so if you know anything please tell me what you know

Thanks,
Dan

If your good at fabricating/welding I wouldn't see why you couldn't do it. Theres a few guys on here making the 8.8 Ford work. I envy people with those kind of fabricating skills/patience.

Subscribed. I've never seen anyone do this, but have wondered about doing it. They're cheap, and as mentioned, turns out almost as strong as a 12 bolt. I want to see a first here--the pressure's on 02 Camaro!!

I put 8.5 rears into my 3rd gene back in the early 90s since we had them in the 9 second GNs w/ Mower axles stock GM gears and LSD unit... The only drawback is the rear will be 2" shorter on each side so instead of a 15X10 rim with a 7.5" backspacing you will need a 5.5" backspace.......This rear end is strong! Custom fabricate your TQ arm and mount and swap the spring seats and panhard mount over, instal your disc brakes etc....

When you put the mounts on did you just cut them off the old one and weld them on the 8.5 or did you use a different meathod??

My friend cut all the mounting brackets off and rewelded them onto the new housing.

We offer a complete bracket kit for $350 shipped. It is the four hole relocation bracket with shock mount, PHB bracket with spring perch, spring perch, e-brake tabs, and brake line clips.

All though I ran a 8.5 for years in a G-body I am not so sure it wouldn't have the same outcome a 12-bolt does over time and ends up having a gear noise issue.

We don't have pictures of it on the web site, it is the same brackets we use on our fabricated housing.

As for lengthening axle tubes, sure it can be done but seems like a lot of work to put into a 10-bolt.

I don't remember what posi unit I had first that broke and ended up going to a spool.

www.racecraft.com has really nice brackets for 3 inch tubes meant for 9 inch f body set up but i used them on my 8.8 build.$235.00 Also my 8.8 started out quite and is crazy loud now after several hard launches in an M6 car. I would debate it being worth it compaired to buying a 9 inch. I have alot of money in building the 8.8 35 spline axles , spool , brackets , gears , 9 inch housing ends , rearend girdle cover, brake lines , bearings, It adds up fast .....

you can get a 9 inch from a few vendors for around $2000 to 2200 or so. but factor in a new driveshaft for the 9 inch. I was able to use a factory steal one with the 8.8 and a m6.

just buy a junk rear with a good case - even out of a 6 banger 4th gen $100 should cover that.

just make sure you consider 3 vs 4 channel that you match up with what you currently have in the car , then when the swap is complete sell off your current rear for more than you paid for the core I am suggesting....
